Abstract: A system, method and device for providing a mobile application across smart phone platforms to enable consumer connectivity and control of media. The viewing experience of the individual is improved by the added control and the advertising experience is enhanced by ensuring advertisements are relevant and actionable. A system for providing interactivity between a mobile device and content includes a content provider providing content for presentation on a display device and a mobile device configured with a media management module communicating to provide user interactivity with the content. The media management module enables individualized consumer media services for the mobile device.

Abstract: A system for providing multimedia content via a cable television distribution network in response to input received from a personal communication device. The system interacts with personal communication devices configured with downloaded system application computer software to receive and present information associated with multimedia content from the infrastructure via a data communication network. The system also interacts with the personal communication devices to receive data from the personal communication devices via a data communication network where the data comprises, but is not limited to, data representative of selections of multimedia content, data representative of instructions controlling the delivery and/or presentation of the multimedia content, and data identifying end user cable television network interface devices to receive the multimedia content.

Abstract: A customized programming guide mosaic screen is provided. A user may selectively customize a mosaic display of video content items provided in a programming guide screen. One or more options may be provided for customizing the programming guide mosaic screen. The one or more options may include an option for populating the programming guide mosaic screen with recommended video content, an option for populating the programming guide mosaic screen with video content items with metadata that is similarly matched with a selected video content item or with a video content item currently being viewed by the user, or an option for populating the programming guide mosaic screen with one or more video content items associated with a specific mood. Upon selection of an option, currently airing content matching the selected option may populate one or more video panes in the mosaic display of the programming guide screen.

Abstract: Links are provided in association with video content that reference and allow navigation to additional content related to the video content. Links may be embedded in the video content metadata or sent separately and synchronized with the video content via time stamps. Selection of the links allows a user to view the additional content or to view the video content item along with the additional content to provide a richer and deeper personalized viewing experience. The video content may be analyzed to determine whether additional content may be available. If additional content is identified, the video content item may include the additional content or the video content may receive links to the additional content. Additional content that is relevant to the user based on the user's viewing history, viewing patterns, viewing behavior, demographic profile, etc. may be identified for association with a given video content item.

Abstract: A temporary Internet bandwidth increase is provided. A speed preview interface is presented for obtaining a request for an Internet bandwidth increase from a customer. The eligibility of the customer for the requested increase of the Internet bandwidth is verified. The increase of Internet bandwidth for the customer is provisioned for a predetermined period of time based on the verification of eligibility of the customer. The predetermined period of time may be a temporary fixed period of time or a period of time based on billing status. When the predetermined period of time is a temporary fixed period of time, the increase in Internet bandwidth is terminated after lapse of the temporary fixed period of time.

Abstract: Non-intrusive user identification to provide personalized media content is provided. Using one or more sensors, a user or a combination of users may be identified. If the user or combination of users is known, user information may be retrieved and rules may be applied for providing content personalized to the identified person or group of people. User behavior may be monitored and changes in the audience composition may be monitored so that personalized content may be adjusted accordingly.

Abstract: Certain embodiments herein relate to a hybrid cable that includes a center conductor for distributing electrical signals and one or more optical fibers adjacent to the center conductor for distributing light signals in a service provider network. According to one configuration, materials found in a coaxial cable may be included in the hybrid cable, such as a dielectric material, one or more protective shields, and an outer protective core. Such a hybrid cable may be utilized to replace drop cables in a service provider network, which may connect an access point, such as a tap, to a customer location. Certain embodiments herein may also relate to making and installing the hybrid cable.

Abstract: An internet protocol (IP)-based outage handling system. The outage handling system collects information about the impact of selected unavailable network resources on users accessing the network of an internet service provider (ISP). The outage handling system stores information identifying the unavailable network resource and monitors network traffic on the managed network for requests to access the unavailable network resource. The outage handling system intercepts requests to access the unavailable network resource and logs information associated with the request. The logged information may be used to track the total number of requests and analyze the actual impact of the outage. The outage handling system optionally collects additional voluntarily provided information that may be used to notify the user when the resource is available and/or to provide compensation for the access interruption caused by the outage.

Abstract: A URL personalization system allowing a television service provider to dynamically associate multiple URLs with the video content item being viewed by the customer is provided. The associated URLs point to additional content that may be of interest to different customer demographics. A generic URL linking to the associated URLs may be inserted into the video content item. The system may personalize the generic URL by replacing or modifying the generic URL with a personalized URL based on information specific to the customer viewing the content before streaming the content or when additional content is requested. The customer is redirected to the personalized URL to obtain the additional content. This allows the television service provider to send a single video content item to all customers or large groups of customers while providing individual customers with an enhanced interactive television viewing experience.

Abstract: A system and method for transmitting files from a sender to a receiver in a television distribution system, for example, a cable television distribution network, is provided. The files are transmitted without the need for transmitting a directory over an out of band communications link. In an exemplary embodiment, a filename corresponding to a file to be transmitted is provided to a transform. The transform calculates a PID based on the filename. The calculated PID is incorporated into the MPEG2 data stream carrying the corresponding file contents. When an application program running in the receiver requests a file, the filename of the requested file is provided to a transform operating in the receiver. The transmitter and receiver transforms are identical. The transform provides a corresponding PID at its output. The PID is used to tune a PID filter on the receiver end such that the requested file is selected from the incoming MPEG bit stream for processing by the processor.

Abstract: Integration of a personalized mosaic screen within a programming guide is provided. The programming guide may be displayed in one of various formats including a mosaic format. The programming guide may be personalized to the user. For example, the user may select to view a display of currently airing content recommended to the user, a display of currently airing content similar to a selected or currently viewed program, a display of currently airing content fitting a specific mood, a display of currently airing content from the user's favorite channel(s), or a display of currently airing content fitting one or more user-selected or automatically-selected themes. The content personalized to the user may be displayed in any of the programming guide formats. The user may selectively switch to a different format, wherein the personalized content may be seamlessly provided in the selected format.

Abstract: A determination of a minimum data transfer rate needed to effectively perform a data transfer activity is provided. If the minimum data transfer rate needed to effectively perform the activity is greater than the amount of bandwidth available according to an associated subscription tier, a notification may be provided to a subscriber that a bandwidth adjustment is available and may be desirable for a better quality experience of the data transfer activity. The notification may be in the form of a text message, an email, a pop-up window, or a user interface control, and may include a selectable functionality, which when selected, may send a request to adjust the amount of bandwidth available to the subscriber.

Abstract: Example embodiments of a time division duplex (TDD) Wavelength Division Multiplex Passive Optical Network (WDM PON) architecture using passive optical splitters are disclosed herein. The disclosed TDD WDM PON includes fixed wavelength optical transmitters in an Optical Line Termination system with tunable receiver colorless Optical Network Units (ONUs) that reuse the downstream CW light to carry upstream data. The same wavelength may be used for downstream and upstream transmissions on a single fiber in the ODN. In this architecture, the number of ONUs may be greater than the number of transmitters at the OLT, allowing for a highly scalable system with capacity for growth. An example embodiment of the disclosed system uses Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) or WDM filters at the OLT and a passive optical splitter in the field.

Abstract: A ranging function provides the location of a set top box (STB) in a telecommunications system. The distance in time from a cable modem termination system (CMTS) to the STB is a fixed time. This time determines a ranging value. To determine the ranging value, a ranging signal is sent from the CMTS to the STB. The STB, immediately upon receiving the ranging signal, transmits a return signal, which is received by the CMTS. The CMTS measures this time, and determines the ranging value. An account may be validated by comparing the ranging value to an expected value.

Abstract: An electronic program guide may be provided. A plurality of encoded content streams may be received along with associated program guide information. The content streams may be re-modulated and associated with new channel assignments. Program guide entries for the content streams may be created and/or updated to reflect the new channel assignments. The re-modulated content streams and program guide entries may then be distributed to a plurality of display devices.

Abstract: This disclosure describes systems, methods, and computer-readable media related to a dynamic advertising insertion infrastructure. A stream setup message associated with a stream content request may be received. Setup information associated with the stream content request may be identified. A non-entertainment playlist selected based on, at least in part, the setup information may be received. The stream setup message may be modified, wherein the modified stream setup message comprises at least one or more references to the non-entertainment content. The modified stream setup message may be routed to a streamer system. A first response message may be received by the router from the streamer system based at least in part on the second stream setup message. A second response message that comprises at least one or more references to the second content may be received by the router. The second response message may be routed by the router to a back office.

Abstract: Content check-in may be provided. Users may be able to check-in a video content item that he/she may be currently viewing or that he/she may view later such that the checked-in content item may be shared with one or more contacts. The user may provide information for one or more contacts to allow for an analysis of available viewing options for the checked-in content item that may be offered to selected contacts based on the viewing location and service provider(s) associated with the selected contacts.

Abstract: Systems and methods for routing broadband communications are provided. Downstream data to be communicated from a cable service provider head end system to a customer device may be received by a provider edge routing device. The downstream data may be mapped by the provider edge routing device to a physical address associated with the customer device, and the downstream data may be output by the provider edge routing device for communication to the customer device. A provider edge device separate from the provider edge routing device may receive the output downstream data. Based at least in part upon the physical address, the provider edge device may determine a port for outputting the downstream data, and the provider edge device may output the downstream data on the determined port.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for generating a genre-based video mosaic from multiple of video sources in a cable services network system. A cable services head end periodically searches a database for a genre descriptor identifying a type of programming broadcast in the cable services network, selects a group of video sources associated with the genre descriptor which are currently being broadcast in the cable services network, and generates a mosaic including the group of video sources associated with the genre descriptor which are currently being broadcast in the cable services network. A set-top box receives the mosaic from the head end, executes an application program enabling a subscriber to selectively tune the video sources in the mosaic, and displays the mosaic on a broadcast channel in the cable services network.
