Patents Assigned to Crane Packing Company
  • Patent number: 4174844
Abstract: A mechanical face seal for application in high pressure sealing environments having a carbon sealing ring in sliding sealing contact with a sealing ring of dissimilar material. The carbon ring is supported on a rigid backing ring. A barrier is provided in overlying relation to the outer circumferential surface of the carbon ring to separate the outer circumferential surface from exposure to the pressure exerted by the sealed fluid.

  • Patent number: 4043727
Abstract: A mold for forming O-ring seals free of flash at their inside and outside diameters. The mold includes a first mold section having a frustrum extending from a surface thereof and a second mold section having a cavity for receiving said frustrum, said frustrum and recess having annular grooves juxtaposed to define a mold cavity for an O-ring seal. Mating surfaces of the frustrum and recess act to seal one side of the cavity while spaced surfaces on the opposite side of the cavity define an annular orifice extending into said mold cavity. The mold further includes a loading chamber and means for injecting a seal composition through said orifice into said mold cavity for curing.

  • Patent number: 4012273
Abstract: Disclosed is a hand tool for wrapping sealing tape such as unsintered polytetrafluoroethylene around the end region of threads on a cylindrical conduit or pipe. The tool includes a holder for a tape dispenser which has mounted thereon a tape cutter so that the dispenser with a roll of tape rotatably held therein is a complete unit usable independently of the tool. The dispenser has a flange, however, which is slid into a groove in the tool and held frictionally therein by a leaf spring in only one predetermined position so that the free end of the tape is presented between a grooved roller and the threads of the pipe. A third roller, mounted on the end of a hand operated lever, is spring-pressed against the opposite side of the pipe wall so that the grooved roller is pressed against the tape to force the tape into the threads, the tool being rotatable about the pipe to wrap one or more turns of tape around the pipe threads.

  • Patent number: 3948531
Abstract: A segmented packing for a ship's propeller shaft at a bulkhead in the ship's hold to prevent water in one ship's compartment from passing through the propeller shaft opening in a bulkhead to an adjacent compartment. The seal is normally held out of contact with the propeller shaft by equally spaced pins. The pins have grooves into which the seal segments are forced by encircling garter springs when the pins are normally pushed axially to apply the packing. The pins can be pushed from either side of the bulkhead so that the operator need not enter the flooded compartment to make the packing effective. The packing can be cocked again after use by operating a threaded jack for each segment and then retracting the pins to their initial position in which the packing is held out of contact with the shaft.

  • Patent number: 3948533
Abstract: The invention disclosed is a composite ring made of press-fitted parts and method of assembling concentric articles having an interference fit, the inner one of which has a surface of a granular material such as ceramic, the method eliminating the customary heat shrinking step by which the outer one, usually of metal, is heated and expanded over the inner one and then cooled to shrink it tightly over the inner one. According to the method disclosed, the ceramic surface is coated with a polyetetrafluoroethylene lubricant and then pressed into the outer one without the use of heat. A mating ring for rotary mechanical end face seals, wherein the mating ring is formed of a ceramic ring pressed into a metal supporting stamping, is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 3941394
Abstract: A substantially no-leak rotary end face seal is disclosed. The seal is comprised of a pair of spaced primary sealing rings between which a rotating mating ring is disposed. A groove in the inboard primary ring face collects leakage from the high pressure side of the inboard seal. A series of radially outwardly inclined holes in the rotating mating ring connect at one end with the groove and at the other end with a radially disposed hydropad in the mating ring face. The outboard primary ring face extends radially inward of the hydropads to provide a continuous sealing surface which is at sub-atmospheric pressure during operation to prevent leakage to the atmosphere. The inclination of the holes produces a pumping action in the leakage in the holes, which is assisted by the hydropads, the pumping action causing the leakage to circulate through a collecting chamber and then back to the sump of the sealed equipment.
