  • Patent number: 6071365
Abstract: Apparatus for and process of folding and securing edges of a relatively large wrap over corresponding edges of a smaller board positioned on and in contact with an adhesively coated surface of the wrap to form a laminated work-piece, the work-piece being moved in a first direction to a first wrapping head having a pair of movable jaws defining a slot. An edge if the sheet extending from the work-piece, is engaged and folded over a corresponding edge of the board and adhesively adheres to the opposite surface of the board. The folded-over edge is then clamped between the jaws of the first wrapping head and carried in that manner in an opposite direction in a parallel but displaced second plane to a similar slot in a second, like, wrapping head. At the latter, the opposite edge of the sheet extending from the work-piece is similarly engaged, folded over and adhered to the board.

  • Patent number: 5456789
Abstract: The invention is an improved apparatus for and method of wrapping boards in which a series of second sheets from a continuous supply roll of elongated sheet material precoated on one surface with an adhesive, are provided after partial lamination to the hitherto unwrapped surfaces of a succession of prewrapped boards and are subsequently completely laminated to such boards. A series of drive rolls move a succession of the prewrapped boards along a feed path to the nip of an anvil and a drive roll where a leading transverse edge of the sheet material adheres in registration to the unwrapped surface of a prewrapped board. A cutting knife severs the sheet material against the anvil to provide a cut portion of the sheet with a trailing transverse edge that will register with the back end of the board. Additional rolls are included for moving the board and adhered cut portion of the sheet away from the anvil and for pressing the board and the cut portion together to insure a positive wrap.

  • Patent number: 5160763
Abstract: This invention involves a system for minimizing the formation of glue drops on picks used to separate a sheet from the surface of a glue applicator drum from which a coating of adhesive is applied to the sheet. Spreader means are provided to wipe from the upstream surface of the drum at least a major portion of the adhesive that lies in the path of each pick.

  • Patent number: 4865067
Abstract: A system for controlling the consistency of a material pumped from a reservoir, by introducing an alterant into the material, which system includes a diaphragm-type pump for pumping the material from a reservoir, the pump being driven by a double-acting air cylinder motor controlled by a pilot-operated two-position, four-way air valve having reducing valves connected at its air input ports to create pressure differentials between the input air and the operating air in the cylinder during steady state-operation of the pump. The motor is mounted so as to be relatively movable substantially toward and away from the pump responsively to change in the pressure differentials in the cylinder due to changes in the consistency.

  • Patent number: 4708759
Abstract: An edge locating device is particularly useful in a system having an articulating frame for supporting and aligning a first sheet of material relative to a second sheet of material supported on a belt below. The device is attachable to the articulating frame and has an edge contact element for locating the edge of the first sheet and a radiation source and detector for locating the edge of the second sheet. The edge contact element, source and detector are fixed with respect to one another and movable between a first position wherein the element is spaced from the edge of the first sheet and a second position wherein the element contacts the edge of the first sheet. When moved to the second position the source and detector can be used to move the articulating frame until the edge of the second sheet is located.

  • Patent number: 4624456
Abstract: An improved apparatus for actuating a suction workholder having a hollow piston slidably mounted in a hollow cylinder. A suction cup is mounted on a distal end of the piston and is in pneumatic communication with a proximal end of said piston via the interior of the piston. A housing defining a vacuum plenum is so attached to the cylinder as to permit pneumatic communication between the plenum and the proximal end of said piston. The improvement resides in a unique positioning of ports and apertures which create pneumatic pressure differentials causing movement of the piston. The use of a biasing spring is not required.

  • Patent number: 4345960
Abstract: An improved apparatus for and method of making laminate articles is described. The invention is particularly useful in making bookcases of the type including relatively stiff front and back cover backing sheet members and a flexible spine backing sheet member. One edge of each of the stiff and flexible backing sheet members is substantially aligned with one another, with the flexible backing sheet member precisely centered between two stiff backing sheet members. The substantially aligned edges are registered with respect to an edge of a sheet of material and the outer opposing edges of the stiff backing sheet members are precisely spaced from one another and registered with respect to a second adjacent edge of the sheet of material. The members are then brought into contact with and laminated to the sheet of material. The improvements include feeding, cutting and supporting mechanisms for the flexible spine sheet member.

  • Patent number: 4336094
Abstract: The disclosed apparatus and method automatically secures three substantially planar sheet members in registration with respective portions of a sheet of material such that (1) one of the sheet members is centered between the other two, (2) the outer oppositely disposed edges of the other two are mutually spaced from one another by a predetermined distance as well as precisely positioned with respect to a first edge of the sheet of material, and (3) another edge of each of the other two sheet members is substantially aligned with the other and with an edge of the center sheet member, all of the aligned edges of the members being precisely positioned with respect to a second edge of the sheet.

  • Patent number: 4070226
Abstract: A high speed system is provided for bringing a plurality of articles, each moving independently in a separate path and at its own speed into registration with each other at a processing station. In applying the invention to a case making machine, successive boards are brought into registration with successive sheet areas defined on a continuous web which moves at a predetermined constant speed. Each board moves at a speed greater than the web speed until registration with the desired sheet area is obtained. A counter measures the registration differential between predetermined detection indicia on each article by keeping track of the distance travelled by each indicium beyond a reference position in the path of the corresponding article. When registration is obtained, the articles are transported at a common speed to the processing station where the separate paths converge.

  • Patent number: 3939513
Abstract: The present invention relates to a system for binding of perforated sheets together through their perforations with at least one loop of flexible tape. The apparatus includes a tape feed station, a tape cut-off station, a tape loop forming station, and a tape loop sealing station. The various stations are interconnected and are activated in a series of interlocking cycles which together result in stringing or inserting a strip of flexible tape through each perforation, cutting the inserted tape to length, and looping the cut length around an adjacent edge of the stack of sheets. End portions of the looped lengths of tape are then sealed to close the loops and thereby form hinges. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, jets are provided to assist stringing the strip of tape through the perforations, and also to assist looping.
