Abstract: An apparatus including recording and playback means for providing a "real time" record of an RS-232C data signal transmitted to a terminal by a host computer. Signal processing means including a universal asynchronous receiver transmitter is included in the preferred embodiment and a cassette recorder means is used as a storage means for the data signal. The recording means is "transparent" to the computer and terminal and allows discretionary playback of recorded data. The playback mode of the apparatus is suitable for use as an archival access or index system and may also be a means for text publication.
