The lifting device rests directly on a well head flange and provides an expansive force between the flange and a temporary polish rod clamp or collet device is attached to a polished rod extending into the well head. The device includes first and second hydraulic cylinders for simultaneously lifting the polished rod to provide a gap between a carrier bar and a polished rod clamp.
