Abstract: Methods and systems for transmitting and receiving digital data are disclosed. In accordance with one aspect, a data communications device is disclosed. The device includes a handheld-sized housing containing circuitry including a powered region and an unpowered region. The powered region is configured to be operable in the absence of a connection to a computing system, the powered region including a programmable circuit and a wireless transceiver, the programmable circuit connected to the wireless transceiver for wirelessly exchanging files with another data communications device, the programmable circuit including a memory. The unpowered region is configured to be inoperable in the absence of a connection to a computing system, the unpowered region including a USB interface and a flash memory. The unpowered region is communicatively connected to the powered region.
