Abstract: A drawn and wall ironed beverage can body, method for forming same, and a sealed and filled can, include a through-hole or aperture in the base. A grommet for charging a propellant in can is located in the aperture. The aperture has a burr that is located on the inboard side of the rim of the aperture.
Abstract: A can bodymaker, which includes a disc feed (1) for feeding a disc (5) directly to the bodymaker itself. A locator (9) positions the disc (5) centrally to a blankholder (12) and a draw pad (10) clamps the disc (5) against a draw die (11). The blankholder (12) then forms the disc into a cup (20) and clamps the cup against a redraw die (14) ready to be picked up by a punch and carried through dies for forming a can body.
Abstract: A metal end for seaming onto a metal container body. The end comprises an outer curl, a centre panel within the outer curl, and a tab having a longitudinal axis (A). The end further comprises a rivet securing the tab to the centre panel, and a score in the centre panel having two spaced apart ends which define a hinge therebetween, the hinge lying on one side of said longitudinal axis (A), such that operation of the tab fractures the score and causes the region of the centre panel within the score to pivot about the hinge and provide an aperture in the centre panel. The score extends into a region of the centre panel that is behind a centre line (B) running through the centre of the rivet and perpendicular to said longitudinal axis (A), and on the other side of the longitudinal axis (A) from the hinge.

Abstract: A matrix barcode on a can component, such as a can end panel, a pull tab of a can end, or the coil stock, is formed by laser application that makes spots that represent the matrix barcode modules.
Abstract: A method of attaching a metal end (7) to a metal container body (6) in order to close an opening in the body, wherein the body (6) has a curled lip at least partially surrounding the opening and the end (7) has an upstanding lip extending at least partially around a periphery thereof. The method comprises locating the end (7) within the body (6) at or near said opening, bringing a curling tool (8) into contact with said upstanding lip of the end (7) and applying a force to that lip, via the curling tool (8), in order to curl the upstanding lip around the curled lip of the body (6) to form interlocking curls.

Abstract: A full aperture beverage end has a center panel, a countersink surrounding the center panel, a main score arranged in proximity to the countersink to define a removable aperture panel and a vent score. The beverage end is adapted for use with products that are pressurized to over 30 psi (200 kPa) when opened, and during opening the vent score is adapted to sever first, controlling the pressure differential between the external surface and internal surface of the center panel, thereby allowing the main score to tear in a controlled and reliable manner.

Abstract: A method of sealing a peelable lid (2) to a flange (4) provided within a metal can body (1) which involves inserting an induction coil (6) into the can body to primarily heat the sealing surface (5) of the flange, while keeping the exterior wall of the can relatively cool to avoid tin reflow and decoration degradation of the exterior wall. The induction coil is subsequently removed from the can body and a peelable lid applied to the flange, whereby residual heat in the flange aids the sealing of the lid to the flange, e.g. by allowing activation of a bonding material.

Abstract: Apparatus for decorating a can body. The apparatus comprises a can body conveying mechanism (1) for conveying can bodies (2) to a printing zone (3), a blanket wheel (4) comprising a plurality of blanket segments (6) and, affixed to each blanket segment, a blanket (7) having a printing surface, the blanket wheel being configured to bring blanket printing surfaces into contact with can bodies within said printing zone, and a plurality of ink stations (5) each comprising a printing plate (31) configured to contact the printing surfaces of passing blankets in order to impart an ink image to the printing surfaces, such that a composite ink image is formed on each blanket printing surface and is printed onto a can body upon contact of the blanket printing surface and the can body within the printing zone.
Abstract: A horizontal can necking machine assembly includes a plural of main turrets and a plural of transfer starwheels. Each main turret includes a main turret shaft, a main gear mounted on the main turret shaft, a pusher assembly, and a die capable of necking a can body upon actuation of the turret shaft. Each transfer starwheel includes a transfer shaft and a transfer gear mounted on the transfer shaft. The main gears are engaged with the transfer gears such that lines through the main gear center and the centers of opposing transfer gears form an included angle of less than 170 degrees, thereby increasing the angular range available for necking the can body. The main turrets and transfer starwheels may operate to neck and move at least 2800 cans per minute, and each pusher assembly may have a stroke length relative to the die that is at least 1.5 inches.
Abstract: A modular method of forming a two part metal closure comprises a lug forming module for forming lugs 3 on a ring 1, a panel curl module, and an assembly module which fixes the panel inside the ring while allowing axial movement of the panel for opening.
Abstract: A method of sealing a peelable lid to a circumferential and inwardly projecting flange formed in a tubular metal can body, where the flange has a sealing surface having a substantially V-shaped profile. The method comprises pressing the peelable lid against the sealing surface of the flange using a punch, an engagement surface of the punch having a generally V-shaped profile such that the apex of the punch presses the peelable lid into the valley of the engagement surface of the flange.
Abstract: The invention provides an aerosol container having an outer container body (10) with a plastic liner or bag (40) arranged therein, into which both product and propellant are filled, characterized in that the plastic liner or bag (40) has a multi-layer construction. The liner or bag (40) comprises a layer that is resistant to the product and a layer that prevents diffusion of the propellant out of the liner or bag (40). Further layers may also be incorporated to provide additional properties as required, for example an oxygen barrier, scavenging etc. Furthermore, one or more tie-layers, such as adhesive for example, may be provided to hold the separate layers together.
