  • Patent number: 5370750
Abstract: A martensitic steel alloy has a unique combination of hardness and corrosion resistance. Broadly stated, the alloy contains, in weight percent, about______________________________________ C 1.40-1.75 Mn 0.30-1.0 Si 0.80 max. P 0.020 max. S 0.015 max. Cr 13.5-18.0 Ni 0.15-0.65 Mo 0.40-1.50 V 1.0 max. N 0.02-0.08 ______________________________________and the balance essentially iron. The alloy is balanced within the stated weight percent ranges such that the ratio %Cr:%C is about 10.0-11.0 and the sum %Ni+%Mn is at least about 0.75. The alloy can be hardened to at least about 60 HRC from a wide range of solution treating temperatures and provides corrosion resistance that is similar to Type 440C alloy.

  • Patent number: 5340534
Abstract: An austenitic, stainless steel alloy having a good combination of galling resistance and corrosion resistance is disclosed containing in weight percent about:______________________________________ Broad Intermediate Preferred ______________________________________ C 0.25 max. 0.02-0.15 0.05-0.12 Mn 3-10 4-8 5-7 Si 2.25-5 2.5-4.5 3-4 Cr 15-23 16.5-21 17.5-19 Ni 2-12 4-10 6-9 Mo 0.5-4.0 0.5-2.5 0.75-1.5 N 0.35 max. 0.05-0.25 0.10-0.20 ______________________________________and the balance of the alloy is essentially iron. This alloy also has good resistance to formation of deformation-induced martensite as indicated by the alloy's low work-hardening rate and low magnetic permeability when cold-rolled to a 50% reduction in cross-sectional area.

  • Patent number: 5277048
Abstract: A process for cold working an elongated form of a steel alloy includes the step of forming a matte texture on substantially all of the surface of the elongated form. The matte texture is characterized by a plurality of random, minute, shallow indentations, uniformly distributed on the elongated form's surface. The process provides an elongated form of steel alloy that has a significantly improved capability to carry lubricant into a cold working tool or die, thereby benefiting the cold workability of the elongated form. An apparatus for carrying out the process according to the invention, in line with one or more other processing operations is also disclosed.
