Patent number: 6022394Abstract: The invention relates to a process for fractioning vinasse, in which process the pH value of the vinasse is lowered by adding acid, and the formed precipitate is separated in order to obtain an inorganic fraction, whereupon an organic fraction remains. The invention also relates to the products obtained. The inorganic fraction mainly contains potassium salt, and it is useful for example as a fertilizer. The organic fraction mainly contains organic acids, and it is useful for example as an additive in animal feed and in producing silage.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1997Date of Patent: February 8, 2000Assignee: Cultor OyInventors: Hannu Paananen, Mirja Lindroos, Juha Nurmi, Tapio Viljava

Patent number: 5932016Abstract: The invention relates to a process for decolorization of solutions of sugars, sugar alcohols and betaine. In accordance with the process, a polyaluminium chloride is added to a solution of sugar, sugar alcohol or betaine having a dry substance content of 10 to 70% by weight and a temperature of 60 to 105.degree. C. in a suitable amount so as to obtain a mixture having a pH of 5.5 to 9.5, thereby precipitating the coloured substances, and the formed precipitate is separated from the solution. The invention also relates to the use of a polyaluminium chloride for decolorization of solutions of sugars, sugar alcohols and betaine.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1997Date of Patent: August 3, 1999Assignee: Cultor OyInventors: Hannu A. Paananen, Tong Wen

Patent number: 5932455Abstract: The invention relates to a method for preparing pure lactic acid or a salt thereof by fermentation. The preparation process comprises bioreactor refreshing cycle and a lactic acid production cycle, wherein during the production cycle a solution comprising substantially pure feedstock is recycled through a bioreactor containing refreshed microorganism cells, the lactic acid produced being neutralized by adding an alkali, and the recycling is discontinued when the alkali consumption is substantially diminished, and during the refreshing cycle the microorganism cells are refreshed by recycling through the bioreactor a carbohydrate solution enriched with nutrients, thus replenishing the capacity of the microorganisms to produce an acid, and recovery of lactate or conversion thereof into lactic acid or other salt.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1997Date of Patent: August 3, 1999Assignee: Cultor OyInventors: Tapio Viljava, Hannu Koivikko

Patent number: 5858424Abstract: The invention relates to the use of an organic acids containing fraction obtained from vinasses and molasses for preserving forage, stimulating microbial growth and activity, and enhancing forage utilization. The fraction may be used as such, or mixed with forage, or used together with a microbe that resists the acidity of the fraction and produces acid.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1997Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Assignees: Cultor Oy, Sareko Agro OyInventors: Markku Virkki, Juha Apajalahti, Erkki Virtanen, Hannu Paananen, Kaj-Erik Monten

Patent number: 5851405Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing vinasse suitable for a column process, in which process dilute vinasse is clarified by means of a high-efficiency centrifuge, after which the vinasse is concentrated and potassium is removed. The invention also relates to the vinasse and the potassium sulphate crystals prepared with the above-described process.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1997Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Assignee: Cultor OyInventors: Hannu Paananen, Mirja Lindroos, Tapio Viljava, Pertti Walliander

Patent number: 5541342Abstract: A process for separating a selected amino acid (enantiomer) from a mixture of different compounds including other amino acids is disclosed, in which process the mixture is contacted with a polymer material which is composed of cross-linked, amino-acid-based monomer units, said polymer material containing a molecular print of the selected amino acid. In the molecular print there is also bound a diastereomeric complex between the selected amino acid (enantiomer), a divalent metallic ion and the amino-acid-based monomer unit. Also the amino-acid-based monomer unit and a process for preparation thereof, as well as a polymer material composed of the amino-acid-based monomer unit and a process for the preparation thereof are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1994Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Assignees: Bio-Swede AB, Cultor OyInventors: Pirjo Korhonen, Bj orn Ekberg, Lauri Hietaniemi
