  • Patent number: 8134472
Abstract: Methods and systems for monitoring a component of an electrical device and/or a brush of a brush holder assembly are provided. One method includes receiving data from a plurality of remote monitoring locations at a central control unit, where the data may be evaluated in order to monitor states of brushes or other components of an electrical device at a plurality of remote electrical facilities. For example, multiple images of a component of an electrical device may be acquired. A comparison of the images, for example, a comparative imaging technique, such as pixel-by-pixel comparison or visual observation, may then be performed in order to evaluate a condition of the brush or other component, such as a threshold and/or anomalous condition of the brush or other component.

  • Patent number: 7960892
Abstract: Disclosed is a resilient member for use in a brush holder assembly. The resilient member may be positioned between at least a portion of a brush and at least a portion of a brush holder. For example, the resilient member may separate or isolate one or more sides of a brush from an adjacent surface of a brush holder. In some embodiments, the resilient member may prevent at least one side of a brush from impacting an adjacent surface of a brush holder. In some embodiments, the resilient member may be a conductive member forming an electrical pathway between the brush and the brush holder for transferring an electrical current between the brush and the brush holder.

  • Patent number: 7169022
Abstract: A method and apparatus for creating a groove in the surface of a collector ring for use in an electrical device. The method and apparatus can be used to create a new groove in the surface of a collector ring having none, or can be used to enhance or re-form an existing groove in the surface of a collector ring. In some embodiments, the groove in the surface of the collector ring is created using a cutting tool that has a cutting action that functions independently from the motion of the collector ring. In other embodiments, a masking material is positioned over a portion of the surface of the collector ring to create a masked portion and an exposed portion of the surface of the collector ring. A groove is then created in the exposed portion of the surface of the collector ring. The masking material is then removed from the surface of the collector ring.

Also illustrated is a brush holder assembly including a first portion in sliding engagement with a second portion. Sliding engagement of the first portion with the second portion may selectively engage and/or disengage a brush catch with a brush. In some embodiments the brush catch is disengaged from the brush when the brush holder is in a locked position and is engaged with the brush when the brush holder is in an unlocked position. Methods and devices for selectively placing a brush holder in a locked or unlocked position are also disclosed.
