  • Patent number: 4759571
Abstract: A fluid transfer module is provided with multiple flow paths for transferring multiple fluids. The module is particularly useful in downhole pumps for passing oil upwardly through a central passage and for passing gas up or down through concentric passages around the central passage. The module also can be used for water or fuel, particularly for downhole steam generation. The module includes an elongate housing or production tubing with an inner coupling having an attached, elongate inner tube which together form a central passage extending substantially the length of the housing. An outer coupling with an attached, elongate outer tube form an inner concentric passage with the inner coupling and tube and an outer concentric passage with the housing. The concentric flow paths are less restrictive to the flow of fluids therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4708574
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for handling bobbins and transferring them from one location to another. The apparatus includes upper and lower housings connected by an articulated joint. The upper housing is supported by a fluid-operated, overhead hoist which is controlled by a manually-operated control mounted on the upper housing. The lower housing has an outwardly-extending, compact, fluid-operated gripper which extends into a central passage of the bobbin and has movable jaws engaging the inner surface. The articulated joint enables the lower housing to pivot relative to the upper one and move the gripper between horizontal and vertical positions. The articulated joint has a manually-operated locking pin locking the lower housing in either position, with a manual release handle located near the hoist control on the upper housing to enable both to be manipulated by one hand. The apparatus also includes a fluid interlock system which prevents accidental release of the bobbin from the gripper.

  • Patent number: 4674959
Abstract: A pressure-operated valve is provided, particularly for use with a downhole pump of the fluid-driven, successive-stage, bladder type. Such a pump includes a plurality of pump and transfer modules. The pump modules have bladders which are operated by fluid, preferably gas, under pressure supplied through two separate internal passages in the modules to pump liquid upwardly through transfer modules. The pressure-operated valve is located below the bottom of the pump module and normally closes off the two gas passages. When gas under pressure above operating pressure is supplied through one of the passages, to establish a sufficient pressure differential between the passages, the valve opens to connect the passages. Heated gas can then be circulated to increase the temperature of internal oil passages extending through the modules to prevent paraffin formation. The two gas circuits can also be connected to enable removal of condensate.

  • Patent number: 4500074
Abstract: Fluid-operated apparatus is provided for handling and lifting loads of various weights. The apparatus includes a fluid-operated hoist with an elongate member extending therefrom to a load-carrying unit. A pilot fluid-controlled regulator supplies fluid to the hoist and a load-responsive, pilot fluid regulator is carried by the load-carrying unit and supplies pilot fluid to the pilot fluid-controlled regulator. The pilot fluid is varied according to the weight of a load so that the pressure of the fluid supplied to the hoist is accordingly varied by the pilot fluid-controlled regulator to automatically balance the load carried by the load-carrying unit. The load can also be lifted by bypassing the pilot fluid-controlled regulator and controlling flow of fluid to the hoist by a manually-adjustable flow control valve. The apparatus also can include a brake for preventing the elongate member from moving up or down while loads are being changed or are at rest.

  • Patent number: 4478558
Abstract: A liquid pump is provided and particularly a downhole pump for use in an oil well bore for pumping oil or in a gas well to remove condensate. The downhole pump includes a plurality of pump and transfer modules, each of which includes an elongate housing with end couplings and with two internal passages extending therethrough. The pump module further has a bladder extending between the end couplings around the internal passages with the couplings having passages connecting one of the internal passages to space on one side of the bladder. When fluid, preferably gas, under pressure is supplied to that passage, the bladder forces liquid therein upwardly into the next module. At the same time, fluid under pressure is exhausted through one of the passages from the space on the opposite side of the bladder of the next pump module, aiding it to receive liquid from the pump module therebelow.

  • Patent number: 3933388
Abstract: Fluid-operated, load-handling apparatus is provided with an interlock control system. The fluid-operated apparatus specifically is a pneumatically-operated hoist having a two-handle operator control, one for raising a load and one for lowering the load. The interlock system enables normal operation of the hoist when a load is properly engaged by a load-engaging unit of the hoist and also when no load at all is present. However, the system prevents operation of the hoist if a load is present and not properly engaged. The interlock system includes a load-sensing device and a load-sensitive valve operated by the device, and further includes a pressure-sensitive valve. The hoist can be operated normally when neither valve is actuated or both are actuated, but not when one is actuated.
