  • Patent number: 7088493
Abstract: A light modulator comprises a mirror, a substrate provided with at least one electrode, and at least one hinge extending between the substrate and the mirror. The mirror is flexible with the hinge being displaceable for allowing for the displacement and/or the deformation of the mirror. Typically, there are two symmetrically disposed hinges, each including upper and lower arms that define an angle therebetween. The upper arm is connected to the mirror, and the lower arm is mounted to the substrate. The upper and lower arms are adapted to pivot relative to one another thereby allowing the angle to vary and thus allowing the mirror to at least one of displace and deform. When unbiased, the mirror may be plane, convex or concave. When biased, the plane mirror adopts a curved attitude, whereas the curved mirror changes its curvature. The upper and lower arms of each hinge are V-shaped and define an apex. The apexes extend inwardly in a facing relationship.

  • Publication number: 20060170920
Abstract: A diffraction grating and a prism with the appropriate characteristics are employed to provide a combined dispersive characteristic that is substantially linear over the visible spectrum. Radiation from the grating and prism is collimated by a lens towards a detector array. The grating or a telecentric stop between the grating and prism is placed at a focal point of the lens in a telecentric arrangement so that equal magnification is achieved at the detector array. If the detector array is replaced by a plurality of optical channels, a multiplexer/demultiplexer is obtained. A one or two dimensional detector array may be used for detecting the characteristics of a radiation beam. Alternatively, a one or two dimensional array of optical channels may be employed in a multiplexer or demultiplex arrangement with a single output/input optical channel.

  • Publication number: 20060172263
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to mill blank constructions. According to the invention, a “smart blank” is pre-configured into a form that closely resembles a restoration being designed. The blank comprises a body adapted to be shaped by material removal into an artificial tooth part having buccal-lingual, mesial-distal and occlusal-cervical axes. In an illustrative embodiment, the body has at most one symmetric plane that is defined by a buccal-lingual-occlusal-cervical cross-section whose normal is along the mesial-distal axis. The blank also includes a holder for mounting the blank in a shaping apparatus. The smart blank provides more efficient milling and high yield.

  • Publication number: 20060171498
Abstract: A nuclear-powered plant for systems of up to about 100 MWs with a confinement section where the reaction takes place in a core having a reactive thorium/uranium-233 composition, and where an external neutron source is used as a modulated neutron multiplier for the reactor core output. The core is housed in a containment structure that radiates thermal energy captured in a multiple-paths heat exchanger. The exchanger heat energy output is put to use in a conventional gas-to-water heat exchanger to produce commercial quality steam.

  • Publication number: 20060171934
Abstract: The present invention is directed to methods for delivering cells to a target tissue in a mammal using glycoconjugate to traffic the cell to a desired organ in the mammal. The methods according to the present invention are especially applicable to administering lymphoid cells such as natural killer (NK) cells activated with interleukin-2 (IL-2), lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells and/or tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and/or cytotoxic lymphocytes (CTLs), or stem cells such as those derived from the bone marrow or from umbilical cord tissue. The methods are also useful for targeting a gene of interest to a tissue in a mammal by introducing a cell containing the gene of interest and administering a glycoconjugate to the mammal.
