Abstract: A portable currency reader and process for detecting the value of currency comprising the detection and reading of the security stripe in currency swiped through the reader by sensing color intensities in light transmitted or refracted through the swiped bill illuminated with ultraviolet radiation and correlating a local maximum intensity of the fluoresced color associated with the value of the currency with a maximum of a calculated composite value of refracted light associated with a discontinuity indicating the presence of the security stripe.
