  • Patent number: 7195298
Abstract: Restraining a spare wheel in a vehicular floor recession during a vehicle rear impact event is accomplished by securing a connection member from a first anchoring location outside of the recession to a second location within the floor recession. The spare wheel lies in the recession and a threaded bolt attached to the floor under the spare wheel passes through the center hole of the spare wheel. The threaded bolt also passes through a spare wheel holding plate that resides on the spare wheel hub to distribute a holding force from the plate to the circumference of the hub created by screwing a threaded wing nut onto the bolt passing through the holding plate. Since the belt passes from the wheel center to a location outside of the wheel's perimeter, the wheel and tire are securely restrained during the transmission of forces during a vehicular rear impact event.

  • Patent number: 7194888
Abstract: A method of vehicle suspension testing includes conducting actual road testing of a vehicle including collecting data, and generating a drive file from the collected data for road test simulation. A vehicle suspension parameter is changed to result in a changed vehicle. Initial simulated road testing of the changed vehicle is conducted using the drive file, and results from the simulated and actual road testing are compared using acceptability criteria to determine whether to conduct further actual road testing of the changed vehicle before conducting further simulated road testing of the changed vehicle in response to the changed suspension parameter. Further simulated road testing of the changed vehicle is conducted if the acceptability criteria are met. Otherwise, further actual road testing of the changed vehicle is first conducted to develop a new drive file for use with additional simulated road testing of the changed vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7195575
Abstract: This invention relates to a sun gear member and sun gear shaft providing improved manufacturing time and material cost savings. This invention further relates to the packaging of a compact electro-mechanical transmission specifically as it pertains to the redesign of the planetary gear arrangement to compensate for the new design of the sun gear member and sun gear shaft. Several design modifications are disclosed in order to reduce the diameter of the planetary gear arrangement and its inclusive members. For example, the ring gear is chamfered to allow for additional clearance so that the planetary gear arrangement and the electronic motor package can be more compact when sun gear has separable sun gear members. In addition to packaging considerations, material costs, fatigue life requirements, and manufacturability of relevant transmission components were governing concerns in the redesign of the sun gear member and sun gear shaft.

  • Patent number: 7181332
Abstract: A residual ratio factor characterizing the amount of residual exhaust gas left in a selected cylinder at the end of a piston intake stroke is determined from tabular and surface models based on previously gathered dynamometer data from a test vehicle at various engine speeds. The residual ratio factor is then used to calculate the mole fractions of air and residual exhaust gas in the selected cylinder, which, in turn, are used to determine mass airflow at an engine intake port at the end of the intake stroke. The mass airflow can then be used to derive further models for determining an engine operating parameter, such as fuel/air ratio, required for achieving at preselected vehicle operating condition.

Abstract: An automatic transmission for a vehicle includes an input shaft, an output shaft, a first and second plurality of gears, and a series of engagement elements. The series of engagement elements includes at least one overrunning engagement element in mechanical communication with the second plurality of gears. A controller is operable to disengage a first engagement element associated with a first one of the first plurality of gears and apply a second engagement element associated with a second one of the first plurality of gears to achieve a speed change of the first plurality of gears. The controller is adapted to disengage one of the overrunning engagement elements from engagement with one of the second plurality of gears within a range of 20 to 120 milliseconds after the speed change of the first plurality of gears to accomplish a gear shift of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 7175532
Abstract: A dual-sectioned automotive propeller shaft features a weakened area in a first section. Under an axial load, the first section buckles transversely to a longitudinal axis of the shaft to absorb substantially all of the energy exerted against the shaft. A second section of the shaft is thereby isolated from consequences of the axial load enabling its placement and proximity to other components mounted to the undercarriage of the vehicle.
