  • Patent number: 11679517
Abstract: A utility knife includes a blade, a housing to store the blade, an actuator, and a pinion gear to deploy the blade. The pinion gear includes one or more sets of teeth that are engaged with a fixed rack of the housing and a sliding rack of the blade holder. The pinion gear is also coupled to the actuator, which is configured to linearly translate the pinion gear. As the pinion gear linearly translates between front and back ends of the housing, the pinion gear rotates due to its engagement with the fixed rack. The further engagement between the pinion gear and the sliding rack causes the sliding rack to advance in the same linear direction as the pinion gear by a distance that is greater than the linear distance traversed by the pinion gear, thereby advancing or retracting the blade connected to the blade holder.

  • Patent number: 11642801
Abstract: A utility blade includes a first blade retention feature positioned on a proximal edge of a tang of the utility blade. The proximal edge is angularly offset from a longitudinal axis of the utility blade. The first blade retention feature is associated with an engagement axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the utility blade. The utility blade is configured to translate along the engagement axis to cause the first blade retention feature to engage with a first blade engagement component of a blade holder. The utility blade further includes a second blade retention feature positioned on a second edge of the tang of the utility blade. The second blade retention feature is positioned along the longitudinal axis of the utility blade and between the first blade retention feature and a distal tip of a cutting portion of the utility blade.

  • Patent number: 11554456
Abstract: Method and apparatus for sharpening a cutting edge of a cutting tool, such as a kitchen knife. In some embodiments, an abrasive assembly has a frame, a handle, and a cartridge that supports a plurality of abrasive members each having an associated abrasive surface. A rod affixes the abrasive assembly to a base assembly to facilitate movement of the abrasive assembly along the cutting edge of the tool responsive to engagement, by a user, of the user handle. Each abrasive member is configured to be moved, by the user, with respect to the handle to present each abrasive surface in turn. In some cases, the cartridge is rotatable about a cartridge axis that may be parallel or non-parallel to a central axis of the rod.

  • Patent number: 11498186
Abstract: Method and apparatus for sharpening a cutting edge of a cutting tool, such as a kitchen knife. A fixture secures opposing sides of a blade of the cutting tool and includes a main body and hinged first and second clamping jaws each having a clamping end adapted to compressingly engage a respective side of the blade. A guide coupled to the main body has converging support surfaces to contactingly engage a back edge (spine) of the blade opposite the cutting edge to center the blade along a central plane of the fixture. A retraction mechanism establishes a clamping force upon each of the respective sides of the blade via the clamping jaws. Further embodiments include a base assembly adapted to receive the fixture, and a swing arm style abrasive assembly to carry out a sharpening operation upon the cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 10850361
Abstract: Apparatus and method for sharpening a cutting tool, such as a kitchen knife. A sharpener has a base unit and one or manual sharpening modules. The base unit has a housing which encloses at least one flexible abrasive disc rotated by an electric motor. Each flexible abrasive disc is adjacent a powered sharpening stage to perform a primary sharpening operation upon the tool. Each manual sharpening module may be removably attachable to the base unit and has a manual sharpening stage that incorporates at least one sharpening element to perform a secondary sharpening operation upon the tool. Each manual sharpening module further has a powered stage guide surface to form a portion of a corresponding powered sharpening stage. When two powered sharpening stages are used, the manual sharpening module(s) can be individually placed between the powered sharpening stages to provide opposing powered stage guide surfaces for each.

  • Patent number: 10814451
Abstract: Apparatus and method for sharpening a cutting tool having a blade portion with a cutting edge, such as but not limited to a kitchen knife. In some embodiments, a powered sharpener moves a flexible abrasive member such as a belt or disc along a neutral plane. A support member contactingly supports a back side of the flexible abrasive member at a medial location along the neutral plane. The support member is positioned adjacent a contact region of an abrasive surface on an opposing front side of the flexible abrasive member against which a cutting edge is brought during a sharpening operation. In some cases, the support member is a stationary or moveable support member such as a pin or roller offset from the contact region. In other cases, the support member is a platen that projects forward to support the contact region.

  • Patent number: 10421171
Abstract: Apparatus for sharpening a cutting tool. In some embodiments, a tool sharpener includes an abrasive medium having an abrasive surface. A stationary tool support guide provides a guide surface that supports a side of the tool during presentation of a cutting edge of the tool against the abrasive surface. A rotatable edge guide has a roller member with a curvilinearly extending outer surface. The roller member is rotatable about an edge guide roller axis to engage, via rolling contact, the cutting edge during the presentation of the cutting edge against the abrasive surface.
