Abstract: A micro actuator driven load beam mechanism for use in a head suspension assembly is disclosed. The mechanism includes a load beam including a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, a hinge portion connecting the proximal and distal end portions of the load beam for permitting relative movement therebetween, and a piezoelectric beam connecting the proximal and distal end portions, the piezoelectric beam being selectively energizable to effect relative movement between the proximal and distal end portions. The load beam includes a pocket for holding at least one end of the piezoelectric beam. The piezoelectric beam and the pocket may be inclined relative to a hinge plane to control the load beam twist and minimize the altitude variations of the beam tip.
Abstract: The method and apparatus have application to the compensation of transient signals produced on reading a data storage device with a magneto-resistive head due to thermal contact with asperities on the data storage medium. Preferably, the data channel employs partial-response maximum-likelihood detection.
The method compensates for an additive signal in a data signal and comprises the steps of: detecting the contribution to said data signal by said additive signal; initially compensating the data signal by maintaining a DC offset in said data signal, the initial level of said DC offset being set in dependence on the detected contribution; and while compensating the data signal, detecting when the compensated data signal exceeds a predetermined threshold and varying the set level of said DC offset in dependence upon said detection.

Abstract: A method of analyzing defects in a magnetic thin film is provided. A magnetic field is applied to the magnetic thin film. The magnetization of the magnetic thin film is measured over a range of different field strengths. A value representative of a magnetic hardness coefficient is calculated for the magnetic thin film from the magnetizations measured. The calculated value is compared with a reference value. Defect information is determined in dependence upon the comparison made.

Abstract: An electric spindle motor has a base assembly (19) and a hollow notatable hub (16) housing a motor. The hub (16) is mounted for rotation about an axis and a stator (12) is mounted on the base assembly (19) inside the hub (16). A liquid filled journal bearing (11, 21) acts between the base assembly (19) and the hub (16) to provide radial support of the hub (16). A gas filled thrust bearing (26, 27, 35) also acts between the hub (16) and base assembly (19) to provide at least axial support of the hub (16).
