  • Patent number: 5619154
Abstract: A numerical voltage controlled oscillator comprising an integrator for generating an estimated sine waveform and an estimated cosine waveform from a variable control signal; a normalizer, connected to the integrator, for generating a normalization factor from the estimated sine waveform and the estimated cosine waveform; and a multiplier, connected to the normalizer, for multiplying the normalization factor with the estimated sine waveform and the estimated cosine waveform. The multiplication of the estimated sine waveform and the normalization factor produces the sine waveform and the multiplication of the estimated cosine waveform and the normalization factor produces the cosine waveform. The frequency and phase of the sine and cosine waveforms vary with changes in amplitude of the variable control signal.

  • Patent number: 5599452
Abstract: A wastewater treatment plant for removal of organic matter, suspended solids and other pollutants comprising a pre-treatment chamber, a biofilm-aeration chamber and a settling chamber. Biofilm grows on biofilm support structure which is stationary and submerged in the mixed liquor of the biofilm aeration chamber. The combination of submerged or surface aeration and suspended solids particle size reduction occurs thereby creating a sufficient fluid flow within the biofilm aeration chamber. This combination of sufficient fluid flow, and reduced size suspended organic particles results in the efficient digestion of organic matter and pollutants by the biofilm growing on the biofilm support structure submerged in the biofilm aeration chamber. This results in a vastly more effective digestive process than conventional processes producing no sludge. Further, resulting treated effluent has a high dissolved oxygen content and low BOD and SS.

  • Patent number: 5596622
Abstract: A method and system for extending the service life of an x-ray tube wherein the coolant fluid which is circulated through a closed circulation system to remove heat generated by the x-ray tube and provide electrical insulation between anode connections and ground (and/or cathode connections) is regularly filtered and/or changed based on predetermined criteria. In addition to the fluid change, an on-line fluoroscopy is also regularly performed based on a separate set of predetermined criteria. Provided for performing the filtering and/or changing is a cart which, preferably, is mobile, portable or otherwise easy and convenient to operate. The cart includes a new oil reservoir, an old oil container, various valves and a bidirectional pump for performing various functions. For example, the cart allows a technician or other skilled individual to connect the cart to a source of new oil for the purpose of filling its new oil reservoir container, this being known as the FILL mode.

  • Patent number: 5596687
Abstract: Apparatus and a concomitant method for accessing an image pyramid that is sequentially stored in a memory. The invention uses an integer portion of the standard U, V, and D values that define a target pixel location within an image pyramid to determine a first address of a pixel value near the target location within the memory. From this first address, the invention determines another seven addresses. These eight addresses are used to recall pixel values that are proximate the target pixel location. These eight pixel values can then be used in a tri-linear interpolation to determine the target pixel value. The disclosed method and apparatus may find applicability in video servers, medical imaging, special effects and animation and location based entertainment systems among other applications.

  • Patent number: 5594325
Abstract: A power system architecture for a spacecraft and a method of a power supply for a spacecraft are presented which take advantage of the reduced plasma interaction associated with positive ground high voltage photovoltaic arrays and provide a negative ground power supply for electrical loads of the spacecraft. They efficiently convert and regulate power to the load bus and reduce power system mass and complexity. The system and method ground the positive terminal of the solar arrays to the spacecraft hull, and using a power converter to invert the electric sign, permit a negative ground for the electrical distribution bus and electrical components. A number of variations including a load management system and a battery management system having charging and recharging devices are presented.

  • Patent number: 5587329
Abstract: In an active matrix electroluminescent display, a pixel containing a grounded conductive electric field shield between an EL cell and the switching electronics for the EL cell. In a method of fabricating the pixel, first, an EL cell switching circuit is formed, then an insulating layer is formed over the switching circuit and a conductive layer (the field shield) is formed over the insulating layer. A through hole is provided in the field shield such that an electrical connection can be made between the switching circuit and an EL cell. The EL cell is then conventionally formed on top of the shield layer. Consequently, the shield isolates the switching circuit from the EL cell and ensures that any electric fields produced in the EL cell do not interfere with the operation of the switching electronics. Furthermore, the switching circuitry for each cell contains two transistors; a low voltage MOS transistor and a high voltage MOS transistor.
