  • Patent number: 5028192
Abstract: Selective collating and binding processes for manufacture of digest-size mail order catalogs, magazines or other materials. Such "books" are most economically collated and bound in pairs on a "2-up" line that simultaneously produces two output streams of books. Mail order retailers and others require that the books be organized according to postal zones for favorable mail rate treatment. They also frequently prefer that various sets of customers receive various editions of the book; repeat buyers, for instance, may receive a more complete edition of a catalog than other buyers. Similarly, two or more mailers may desire that their mailing be combined, so that two or more sets of catalogs are packaged together for the same postal zones in order to receive favorable mail rate treatment. Processes of the present invention provide selective binding and collating on a 2-up line of such different catalogs, different editions of the same catalog, or different editions of different catalogs, or "versions.

  • Patent number: 4395179
Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for charging particulate material of varying sizes into a shaft furnace, such as an oil shale retort or blast furnace, in which a highly uniform distribution of particle sizes of charge material and a desired height and level of stockline are obtained. The apparatus comprises a non-rotatable distribution hopper having a dividing means beneath choked feed means to substantially equally divide the material into a plurality of port means. The apparatus also includes partially movable distributor means and spreader means having surfaces of different inclinations to thoroughly mix the variously sized particles. Also disclosed is apparatus for providing gas lock means to prevent loss of gas pressure from the furnace, sensing the stockline level in the furnace, weighing the material in a hopper, temporarily storing certain amounts of charge material, and controlling the operation of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4378045
Abstract: Disclosed are checker tiles for regenerative heating stoves, each tile having the general shape of a parallelepiped, the preferred tile being square in plan, having apertures extending through the tiles and having complementary ribs and grooves extending on the ends of the tile between adjacent apertures to interlock the tiles with contiguous end-abutting tiles and prevent substantial lateral movement thereof when the tiles are arranged in stacked overlapping relation. Also disclosed is supporting means for checker tiles providing for low friction and preferential sliding of horizontal contacting surfaces to permit lateral relative movement between the lowermost course of tiles and supporting means that avoids damage to tiles on dimensional changes of the tiles or supporting means due to temperature changes in operation of the stove.

  • Patent number: 4342555
Abstract: A seal for the ends of a rotary kiln or similar rotary device having a plurality of graphite blocks adapted to conform to the circular periphery of the kiln exterior. The graphite blocks are pressed gently against the shell by seal adjusting segments radially biased toward the center of rotation of the kiln. The seal adjusting segments are adjustably supported in a holder with a counterweighted rope circumscribing the seal adjusting segments to provide the biasing pressure and thereby hold the graphite blocks in sealing engagement with the kiln.

  • Patent number: 4276120
Abstract: A process and apparatus are disclosed for purification of petroleum coke to produce an economical low sulfur product suitable for electrode production. Finely ground green coke is treated on an enclosed circular grate apparatus and subjected to sequential treatments in which hot gases are passed through a deep permeable bed of coke on the grate in a series of separate treating zones including a preheat zone, a heating and calcining zone, a desulfurizing zone in which hydrogen rich gas is passed through the heated bed, a reduction gas generation zone in which hydrocarbon and steam pass through hot coke to form hydrogen, and a cooling zone.Adequate temperatures for calcination and desulfurization are achieved and the proper heating rate is obtained without overheating the metal parts of the hearth by use of radiant and hot gas heating means in the calcining zone and in the desulfurizing zone and by introducing the air and/or fuel gas near the bottom of the coke bed.
