  • Patent number: 7278660
Abstract: An apparatus has an adjustable steering column that moves between first and second positions along a path. The path defines tilting movement of at least a portion of the steering column, telescoping movement of at least a portion of the steering column, or both tilting and telescoping movement. The apparatus also includes a lock moveable between locked and unlocked positions. When the lock is in the locked position, the steering column can not move adjustably along the path. When the lock is in the unlocked position, the steering column can be adjusted along the path. The apparatus also includes a switch operable to emit an unlock signal, and a controller communicating with the switch to receive the unlock signal. The controller controls the lock to move to the unlocked position in response to the unlock signal. The apparatus also includes a signal generator operable to emit a second signal to the controller.

  • Patent number: 7280335
Abstract: A protection circuit for protecting a switch from a fault includes a first sensing circuit and a second sensing circuit. The first sensing circuit senses a low-side load current through a switch that includes a first terminal, a second terminal and a control terminal. The first terminal is connected to a low-side of the load and the second terminal is connected to ground. The switch provides a conductive path between the first and second terminals responsive to a control signal provided on the control terminal. The first sensing circuit acts to reduce a magnitude of the control signal to limit the low-side load current, carried by the switch, when the low-side load current exceeds a first predetermined value. The second sensing circuit senses a voltage at the low-side of the load and interrupts the low-side load current, when the voltage at the low-side of the load exceeds a second predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 7278384
Abstract: A two-step roller finger follower having a movable high-lift portion and a low-lift portion. A lock pin mechanism in the low-lift portion includes a lock pin that may be driven hydraulically into latched engagement with the high-lift portion. The lock pin assembly comprises a lock pin and a separable switching pin. A blocking clip mountable on the associated hydraulic lash adjuster includes first and second ends that extend into a switching pin locking groove to block axial motion thereof. A ramp on the follower body mates with a ramp on the blocking clip such that oscillatory motion of the follower engages and disengages the blocking pin from the locking groove. The clip unblocks the switching pin at only those times in the camshaft rotational cycle when complete locking and unlocking is assured, and ending well before the beginning of the next valve lift event.

  • Patent number: 7278406
Abstract: A low-resistance hydrocarbon adsorber comprising a spiral-wound laminated structure for mounting into an entrance port of an engine air intake system to prevent hydrocarbon evaporations from reaching atmosphere. Preferably, the adsorber is formed as a cartridge and comprises a flexible polymeric sheet support to which a thin flexible sheet of activated carbon sheeting is laminated on a first support side. The support is provided on a second side with features, for example, ribs or bumps, extending above the surface. When the laminate is spirally wound, the spiral convolutions are spaced apart by the features. Preferably, the convolutions are spaced apart by a distance such that there is a high probability that hydrocarbons migrating out of a shut down engine will encounter the adsorber and thus be adsorbed before reaching the atmosphere. The windings may fill all or a portion of the open area of the intake port.

  • Patent number: 7280046
Abstract: A steering column assembly (18) of the type for controlling one or more steerable wheels in a motor vehicle includes a steering wheel (14) interface secured to the free end of a steering column (20). The steering column assembly (18) includes powered telescope adjust and tilt adjust features which a driver (16) uses to adjust the position of the steering wheel (14) for maximum comfort. One or more condition sensors (48) monitor numerous parameters about the vehicle. When an emergency condition is detected, such as the seat belt warning, a door that is ajar, various engine conditions, or erratic driving activity, a haptic controller (50) rapidly vibrates the steering wheel (14) through the telescoping and tilt adjusting motors (32, 40) as a means of alerting the driver (16) to the emergency condition.

  • Patent number: 7280662
Abstract: A satellite-based digital audio radio (SDAR) receiver is configured to temporarily store data that may be transmitted to the SDAR receiver at a time inconvenient to the subscriber. A memory arrangement buffers data output by a channel decoder. The SDAR receiver can use the buffered data prior to using any currently transmitted data. The buffered data is associated with buffered timing information that lags behind the current timing information associated with the currently transmitted data. The buffered data is available for use only once before a decryption subsystem receives the current timing information. If the subscriber uses the currently transmitted data, the decryption subsystem receives the current timing information. The decryption subsystem decrypts only data that is associated with timing information that is no earlier than the latest timing information received by the decryption subsystem.

  • Patent number: 7278526
Abstract: The invention provides a brake-transmission interlock system for a vehicle. The brake-transmission interlock system prevents the driver from shifting out of a park transmission position with a selector lever unless at least one brake of the vehicle is engaged. The brake-transmission interlock system includes a locking member operable to move to a locked position wherein movement of the selector lever is prevented. The locking member can move to the locked position from an unlocked position wherein the selector lever is moveable to shift out of the park transmission position. The brake-transmission interlock system also includes an indicating device operable to communicate a signal corresponding to the park transmission position to the driver. The locking member is in the locked position prior to the signal being communicated.
