  • Patent number: 7484430
Abstract: The invention includes a steering column assembly positionable in a vehicle. The invention also includes a connecting device releaseably attachable to the vehicle. The connecting device is moveable between a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration to selectively lock the steering column assembly with respect to the vehicle. The invention also includes a first energy absorber disposed between the connecting device and the steering column assembly. The first energy absorber is selectively engageable to dissipate energy. For example, the first energy absorber is engaged to dissipate energy in response to relative movement between the connecting device and the steering column assembly when the connecting device is in the locked configuration. The first energy absorber is disengaged with respect to dissipating energy in response to relative movement between the connecting device and the steering column assembly when the connecting device is in the unlocked configuration.

  • Patent number: 7486040
Abstract: A motor control circuit for supplying power to a DC motor which drives a mechanism having a driven shaft, the control circuit having a parallel combination of a capacitor and switch in series with the DC motor. When the movement of the driven shaft is obstructed, the motor driver and the switch are synchronized in a manner to first charge the capacitor and then to reverse the voltage generated by the motor driver to momentarily double the voltage applied to the DC motor so that the increased torque of the DC motor is able to overcome the obstruction. The mechanism having a shaft driven by the DC motor may be, for example, an ETC valve or a window regulator.

  • Patent number: 7485984
Abstract: An electronic control system 310 is provided for independent actuation of a plurality of hydraulic actuators 38, 39. The electronic control system 310 employs an electronic driver 314 connected to a first parallel circuit or first low side driver 316, and a second parallel circuit or second low side driver 330. Each parallel circuit 316, 330 contains a first and a second actuator L1, L2, respectively, connected in series to a first and a second low side MOSFET Q9 and Q10, respectively. Pulse width modulation of the electronic driver 314 in conjunction with selective actuation of either low side driver 316, 330 results in rapid response to system control algorithms whereby each actuator L1 or L2 may be de-activated in a relatively quick manner thereby improving vehicular control.

  • Patent number: 7486835
Abstract: A system and method for enhancing the contrast within an image. An enhanced image can be generated in a real-time or substantially real-time manner from an initial image. The pixel values of the initial image can be used to populate a histogram or otherwise serve as the basis for subsequent processing. A valley can be identified within the range of pixel values for use as a stretch metric used by a stretch heuristic to expand the contrast of the pixel values in the initial image by expanding the range of pixel values associated with the pixels in the histogram. In some embodiments, the initial image is first divided into image regions that are each associated with individualized processing. A bilinear interpolation step can then be performed to smooth the integrated image after the individualized processing is used to stretch the pixels within the individual image regions.

  • Patent number: 7481054
Abstract: A shape memory alloy actuator includes a housing, a plunger, a shaft, a resilient member, and a shape memory alloy component. The plunger is slidably but non-rotatably received in the housing and has a first locking component. The shaft has a second locking component. The resilient member is positioned to slidably urge the plunger into a disengagement position of the first and second locking components allowing rotation of the shaft. The shape memory alloy component is positioned to slidably urge the plunger into an engagement position of the first and second locking components, when the shape memory alloy component is heated, preventing rotation of the shaft. In one application, the first and second locking components are interdigitable vehicle-parking-brake latch teeth.

  • Patent number: 7478969
Abstract: A rotatable combination that includes first and second members respectively having first and second longitudinally extending pluralities of splines. The second plurality of splines extend substantially parallel to the rotational axis. The first plurality of splines includes first and second longitudinally extending sections having different orientations with the second longitudinal section defining an angle with the rotational axis. The first longitudinal section engages the second plurality of splines before the second longitudinal section during assembly of the two members. Engagement of the second longitudinal section with the second plurality of splines generates a greater resistance to longitudinal movement than engagement of the first longitudinal section with the second plurality of splines.

  • Patent number: 7480351
Abstract: A technique for demodulating secondary data from a hierarchically modulated signal includes a number of steps. A gray coded eight phase shift key (8-PSK) hierarchically modulated signal is received that includes primary data and secondary data. An imaginary portion of the signal is determined and a real portion of the signal is determined. An absolute value of the real portion of the signal may then be subtracted from an absolute value of the imaginary portion of the signal to provide the secondary data. The gray coded 8-PSK hierarchically modulated signal may be a uniform gray coded 8-PSK hierarchically modulated signal or a non-uniform gray coded 8-PSK hierarchically modulated signal.
