Abstract: The above discussed and other drawbacks and deficiencies of the prior art are overcome or alleviated by an all-wheel steering system for a vehicle comprising a controller having a first input for receiving a signal from a hand wheel position sensor, a second input for receiving a signal from a vehicle speed sensor, and a third input for receiving a signal that varies depending upon whether a trailer is hitched to said vehicle. The controller generates an output for controlling a rear wheel steering actuator. The output varies as a function of the first, second, and third inputs such that when a trailer is hitched to said vehicle the out-of-phase rear steer amount at low speeds is reduced and the in-phase rear steering amount at high speeds is increased.

  • Patent number: 6670875
Abstract: An improved solenoid for providing linear actuation. The outer polepiece of the solenoid is provided with an axial journal bearing for supporting an actuating shaft extending from the solenoid armature. Radial tolerance between the bearing inner bore and the shaft is as small as in practically possible, which feature permits elimination of the prior art portion of the guiding sleeve extending into the outer polepiece, thereby retaining frictional losses with only the remaining sleeve portion in the inner polepiece. Small prior art air gaps at interfaces 42,44 between the polepieces and the housing are eliminated to minimize reluctance of the magnetic circuit. A significant increase in actuating force is realized in comparison with a prior art solenoid actuator.

  • Patent number: 6668774
Abstract: An assembly having first and second coaxially-related elements oscillatingly-rotatable about a mean angular relationship therebetween. An axial well in one element is threaded and an axial well in the other element is splined. A pin having threads on a first end and splines on the second end is disposed on both the threads and splines of the two elements. A Hall-effect magnetic field strength sensor is disposed coaxially adjacent to the assembly. A permanent magnet mounted on an end of the pin adjacent the Hall-effect sensor creates a magnetic response therein. As the angular relationship between the two elements changes, the pin turns with the splined element, the threads simultaneously displacing the pin and magnet axially of the assembly, thereby changing the intensity of the field experienced by the sensor and the signal output therefrom in proportion to the relative angular position of the two elements.

  • Patent number: 6671641
Abstract: A method for calibrating hydraulic actuators includes installing an actuator in a test stand and performing an electrical signal sweep to obtain a series of pressure values. Based on desired pressure values, signals yielding unwanted pressure values are removed and the remaining signal values and pressure values are stored in a central database as a look-up table for the actuator. Multiple actuators are then assembled to form a module assembly. The customized look-up tables for the actuators forming the module assembly are retrieved from the database. Based on those tables, signals are applied to the actuators to determine if the pressure values fall within specified tolerance windows. If the pressure values fall within the specified tolerance windows, the customized look-up tables are stored in the memory of a vehicle electronics package. If not, the signals are adjusted so that the pressure values fall within the specified windows, and the adjusted customized look-up tables are then stored in the memory.
