  • Patent number: 6150932
Abstract: A method is disclosed for analyzing range and range rate data obtained by a vehicle obstacle detection system to determine whether the dynamic situation justifies alerting the vehicle operator of reducing the speed of the vehicle. Assumed values of vehicle and obstacle deceleration are used with known and assumed values of their velocities to calculate limiting warning distances that in turn are used to calculate an estimated warning distance. The estimated distance is compared with the range value as a basis of determining whether an alert is made.

  • Patent number: 6151540
Abstract: An improved occupant position detection system and method in which a periodically updated position output of an occupant recognition system (ORS) is dynamically augmented for purposes of determining if the occupant is out-of-position (OOP) so as to inhibit or allow deployment of occupant restraints in a timely manner. Vehicle acceleration data developed by an accelerometer of the restraint system is double integrated to form an incremental occupant displacement value. The incremental displacement value is reset to zero each time the ORS updates its position output, and between updates is used to modify the last position output to provide a dynamic position value for OOP determination. If the occupant is not wearing a seat belt, the incremental displacement value is combined with the last ORS position output both prior to and during the crash event.

  • Patent number: 6147654
Abstract: A backlite antenna system for a vehicle that includes a separated AM/FM antenna grid and a defogger grid. The backlite antenna system includes a defogger grid grounding system having an RF grounding strip that is capacitively coupled to the vehicle body through a urethane seal that seals the window to the vehicle body. The grounding strip and an end bar of the defogger grid create an FM slot gap therebetween and provide grounding at AM frequencies. An AM grounding line is connected to the grounding strip and to an element of the defogger grid. The grounding line has a length one-quarter of the wavelength of the FM transmission band to provide a high impedance path for FM frequencies, but a low impedance path for AM and DC frequencies. The grounding strip provides a high impedance path at DC, but a low impedance path at AM and FM frequencies.

  • Patent number: 6143355
Abstract: An improved method of making a multiple print thick film circuit wherein the alignment between successive conductor print steps is both optically inspectable and electrically testable. The first of two or more successive conductor print layers includes a pair of adjacent alignment features with a non-conductive gap therebetween, and the successive conductor print layer includes a pair of identical alignment features which are printed directly on top of the alignment feature pair of the first print layer. When the successive print layer is properly aligned with the first print layer, the non-conductive gap between the alignment features of the first print layer will be preserved, and test probes brought into contact with the features or associated probe pads will reveal a high or open-circuit impedance therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6139057
Abstract: A position control apparatus for an adjustable motor vehicle steering column including a friction clamp, a control shaft rotatable between locked and unlocked positions, a hollow rectangular frame moveable relative to the control shaft when the steering column is adjusted, a first toothed pawl a second toothed pawl, and an elastic bushing resiliently supporting the first and second toothed pawls on the control shaft inside of the rectangular frame. When the control shaft is rotated to its locked position the friction clamp frictionally captures the adjusted position of the steering column. The pawls have gear sectors thereon which are relatively angularly offset by one-half tooth pitch. When the control shaft is rotated to its locked position, the one-half tooth pitch offset assures that at least one of the gear sectors will mesh with a rack gear on the rectangular frame even if the other engages the rack gear peak-to-peak.
