Publication number: 20120144535Abstract: This invention relates to a method for making a genetically modified cotton plant by regenerating a whole plant from a plant cell that has been transfected with DNA sequences including a gene, the expression of which results in suppression of oil biosynthesis in the developing seed. Plants made according to this method exhibit increased production of fiber. Also disclosed is a method for making a non-genetically modified cotton plant with reduced seed-oil content by selecting native alleles or alleles produced through mutagenesis that result in reduced oil content with resulting enhanced fiber yield. Methods are disclosed for developing commercially acceptable cultivars that contain the cottonseed-oil suppression trait. Plant cells, plant tissues, plant seed and whole plants containing the above DNA sequences and alleles form part of the invention.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 3, 2007Publication date: June 7, 2012Applicant: DELTA AND PINE LAND COMPANYInventors: Kater Davis HAKE, Thomas Arthur KERBY, Harry Benjamin COLLINS, Don Lee KEIM

Publication number: 20070028330Abstract: Preferred embodiments of this invention relate to a method for increasing fiber yield in a cotton plant by regenerating a whole cotton plant from a plant cell that has been transformed with a dominant negative allele for an endoplasmic reticulum located gene. The expression of this gene results in suppression of oil and protein biosynthesis in the developing seed and increased production of fiber in the plant.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 9, 2006Publication date: February 1, 2007Applicant: Delta and Pine Land CompanyInventors: Kater Hake, Kent Chapman, Thomas Kerby, Thomas Speed

Patent number: 6102971Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for rapidly introducing genes into germplasm which involves the use of crossing, backcrossing, intense selection and agronomic trait selection. More specifically, the method comprises the steps of: (a) crossing two parents of two different species, one of the parents (the donor parent) contains the gene of interest; (b) backcrossing the resultant progeny with the parent not containing the gene of interest (recurrent parent) for two to four backcrosses; (c) performing intense selection on a segregating generation of the progeny from the backcrossing step; and (d) selecting final germplasm on the basis of desired agronomic traits. The present invention further relates to two new and distinctive high yielding Pima Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) Bollgard.RTM. cotton cultivars, designated 926 B Pima and 930 B Pima, which have been prepared in accordance with the method of the present invention.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1999Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignee: Delta and Pine Land CompanyInventor: Lawrence P.
