    Abstract: A fluid operable power unit which is particularly adapted for movement of a compaction head in a refuse container. However, the power unit is also useful in other types of mechanism.The power unit comprises a plurality of telescopically movable cylinders and pistons. Fluid pressure is applied for movement of the first cylinder. Then increased fluid pressure is applied for movement of the second cylinder. As the first cylinder ceases to move, fluid pressure increases and automatically operable valve means traps the fluid which has moved the first cylinder. Then increased fluid pressure moves the second piston and second cylinder. As the second piston and the second cylinder move under the influence of increased fluid pressure, the fluid which is trapped is increased in pressure.Thus, high pressure forces act to move an actuator member for compaction or for any other purpose.

    Abstract: A method and a structure for the handling of hazardous liquid wastes and for handling hazardous solid wastes. The method includes the positioning of hazardous waste container units at a site in which hazardous wastes are generated. The hazardous waste container units are filled with hazardous wastes at the generation site and removed from the generation site and transported to a site in which hazardous wastes are accumulated. The hazardous waste container units are emptied and cleaned for transport to the same hazardous waste generation site or to another hazardous waste generation site.Hazardous waste container units which are constructed according to this invention include a rigid container. The rigid container is encompassed by a rigid frame. The rigid frame has lift engagement elements by which the hazardous waste container unit can be lifted.

    Abstract: Arm and fork mechanism for moving a refuse retainer with respect to a refuse container which has an opening in the upper portion thereof. Arms are pivotally mounted adjacent the refuse container. The arms are movable between a position adjacent a side portion of the refuse container and are also movable to a position above the refuse container. A plurality of forks is supported by the arms and angularly movable with respect to the arms. A fluid motor is operably joined to the arms and operably joined to the forks for angularly moving the forks with respect to the arms. The fluid motor is provided with a plurality of operation positions. Thus, the forks are angularly movable by the fluid motor to any one of a plurality of angular positions for lifting and dumping a refuse retainer.

    Abstract: A hydraulic control system is provided, including first and second bidirectional fluid actuated motors adapted to travel a predetermined amount in each direction. A directional control valve is placed in fluid communication with a supply of high pressure, hydraulic fluid and a reservoir and has a first operating position for directing the supply of fluid to the motors in a first direction of flow and a second operating position for directing the supply of fluid to the motors in a direction of flow opposite to the first direction of flow. A combination sequence and regeneration valve is in continuous fluid communication with the supply and the second motor for preventing the operation of the second motor until the first motor has reached its limit of travel and for regenerating fluid from one side of the second motor to the other side when the first motor has reached its limit of travel and the control valve is in its second operating position.

    Abstract: Compaction apparatus for a refuse collection vehicle provided with a body having a hopper to receive refuse. The hopper has opposed enclosure side walls. Hydraulic motor members are positioned adjacent the enclosure side walls and operate a packer member which extends between the enclosure side walls and which forces refuse from the hopper into another portion of the body for compaction of the refuse. The hydraulic motor members are thus positioned so that a maximum opening into the hopper is provided for receiving the refuse and for compaction thereof, and the packer member is of maximum length between the side walls to compact a maximum volume of refuse in the body during each compaction cycle.

A cable has one end thereof attached to the load support frame. The cable has portions in engagement with the sheaves and has a free end adapted to be attached to a load. A load is thus drawn upon the load support frame as the hydraulic cylinders are operated.

    Abstract: Structure for attachment and support of a fender of a vehicle such as a truck or the like in which the vehicle is subject to travel over rough or uneven terrain. An attachment member extends freely through a bracket which is joined to the frame of the vehicle. The attachment member also extends freely through a portion of the fender which is adjacent the bracket. Thrust washers having convex and concave engagement surfaces freely encompass the attachment member and are positioned between the fender and the bracket and are attached thereto. Thus, relative movement between the fender and the bracket is permitted to prevent distortion or twisting of the fender as the vehicle travels over rough terrain.

    Abstract: A lifting and dumping apparatus for use with a front end loading refuse vehicle. The apparatus includes a pair of lift arms which extend forward of the cab of the vehicle and which are pivotally secured to the sides of the vehicle. A rotatable front tube extends between the front ends of the left arms, and a pair of fork arms are pivotally connected to the front tube. The fork arms can pivot between an open position and a closed position. In the open position the fork arms extend forward of the lift arms, generally perpendicular to the front tube for engagement with a detachable refuse container, and in the closed position the fork arms are generally parallel to the front tube so that their projection forward of the left arms is eliminated. Hydraulic cylinders are provided for pivoting the fork arms, and a hydraulic circuit is provided with a sequencing valve to close the fork arms one at a time.

    Abstract: Tail-gate operating and locking apparatus for tail-gates utilized in refuse handling vehicles. The apparatus includes hydraulically operated means with a piston rod pivotally connected to the tail-gate and a cylinder pivotally connected to a latch mechanism for locking the tail-gate on the vehicle body. The latch mechanism comprises a bell-crank pivotally connected to the hydraulic cylinder and a locking element pivotally connected to the bell-crank and having a latching pin adapted to engage a hook secured to the tail-gate in a closed position thereof. A ramp element is rigidly attached to the vehicle body. The ramp element is provided with a cam surface to guide the latching pin during its reciprocating movement from and into engagement with the hook.
