Abstract: A filled-resin composition useful for porcelain repair and as a dental composite and therefore made up of non-toxic materials and a method for repairing porcelain or teeth. The composition comprises a methacrylate functional resin usable in dental composites, powdered filler-colorant therein, at least one photoinitiator for the resin in an amount sufficient to initiate polymerization and complete it in depth within about half a minute when exposed to a visible-light output of at least 5,000 foot candles, the photoinitiator being an exciplex of (1) an carbocyclic ketone or acetal and (2) either ethyl-4-dimethyl amino benzoate or ethyl-2-dimethyl amino benzoate, and at least one accelerator-free peroxide curing agent for the resin in an effective amount for completing polymerization within about one-half hour of any portion of the resin not receiving sufficient light to effectuate complete cure before then.

Abstract: A filled-resin dental composite. The filler is a mixture of hydrophobic silica particles about 0.01 to 0.04 micron in diameter and glass particles about 2 to 30 microns in diameter. Preferably, the glass is x-ray opaque. An improved method for restoring carious lesions in a living tooth is presented, using the composite.

Abstract: A provisional crown-and-bridge resin comprising a liquid resin component and a powder component. The liquid resin component contains tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate as a major ingredient and is free from methyl methacrylate. It also contains an anti-oxidant and an accelerator. The powder component contains poly (ethyl methacrylate) as a major ingredient and a curing agent for the resin component. The powder is mixed with the resin shortly before application at a ratio of about two to about five parts of powder to one part of liquid resin by weight, to give a suitably flowing mixture. The resin component may also contain ethyl methacrylate as a major ingredient and may contain ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate as a major ingredient. The powder may include a substantial proportion of amorphous silica and preferably incorporates a substantial amount of X-ray opaque barium glass.

Abstract: A composition for detecting normally invisible cracks and splits in teeth, both in situ or in vitro. A detector solution contains a dye adapted to selectively stain such cracks and splits, advantageously methyl violet, a small amount of a surfactant, preferably dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, and a small amount of an acid, preferably glacial acetic acid, the remainder essentially water. A kit provides a holder or container and, at least one bottle containing such detector solution and one bottle containing a solvent for removing detector solution after the completion of the test. A preferred kit provides, in addition to the dye-removing solvent, two bottles, one containing solvent and dye, the other one containing solvent, surfactant, and acid, and equal amounts from each of these two bottles are mixed just before use on a patient. A method of selectively staining and detecting normally invisible cracks and splits is also provided.
