    Abstract: A process for the preparation of mono-fatty acid or hydroxymono-fatty acid esters of isopropylidene derivatives of a polyglycerol is disclosed. A C6-C22 fatty acid or -hydroxy fatty acid is reacted with isopropylideneglycerol glycidyl ether or diisopropylidenetriglycerol glycidyl ether in a molar ratio of 0.5:1 to 1:0.5 at temperatures of 373473 K. in the presence of a catalyst. The monoisopropylidenediglycerol mono-fatty acid ester or monoisopropylidenediglycerol hydroxy mono-fatty acid ester or diisopropylidenetetraglycerol mono-fatty acid ester or diisopropylidenetetraglycerol hydroxy mono-fatty acid ester obtained is optionally purified by distillation, fractional distillation and/or ion exchange.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a nonionic surfactant includes the steps of: cleaving at least one of the isopropylidene groups of an isopropylidene polyglycerol C.sub.6 -C.sub.22 -fatty acid or mono- or polyhydroxy fatty acid ester, by hydrolysis or ketal exchange, in the presence of acid, at a temperature in the range of about 20.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., and at atmospheric, reduced or superatmospheric pressure, thereby regenerating hydroxyl groups on the polyglycerol; and recovering the resultant polyol ester nonionic surfactant. Such polyol ester surfactants are useful as emulsifiers, especially for preparing skin care or cosmetic formulations and paints and wood-preservation agents.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a fatty acid polyglycerol ester mixture containing a C.sub.8 to C.sub.24 fatty acid ester component comprising (A) about 20 to 80% by weight of fatty acid monoester of a polyglycerol containing more than about 40% of C.sub.10 and/or C.sub.8 in the ester component of the polyglycerol; (B) about 80 to 20% by weight of fatty acid diester of polyglycerol; and (C) about 15 to 0% by weight of tri- and higher esters of the polyglycerol containing than about 40% of C.sub.10 and/or C.sub.8 in the ester component of the polyglycerol; and further wherein the resultinq fatty aoid polyglycerol ester mixture comprises (A) about 20 to 45% by weight of fatty acid diglycerol ester; (B) about 30 to 45% by weight of fatty acid triglycerol ester; and (C) about 50 to 10% by weight of fatty acid tetra-and higher polyglycerol esters.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of a composition containing diglycerol, in which process at least a stoichiometric amount of isopropylideneglycerol is reacted with .alpha.-monochlorohydrin in the presence of at least one alkaline compound at sufficient temperatures to yield an intermediate product composition containing monoisopropylidenediglycerol and a salt. Most of the salt and water formed is removed from the intermediate product composition, and any unreacted isopropylideneglycerol is removed by distillation. The remaining intermediate product composition containing monoisopropylidenediglycerol is subsequently reacted with water in the presence of at least one acidic catalyst at sufficient temperatures to yield a product composition containing diglycerol and acetone and substantially no cyclic glycerols.

K. to 373.degree. K., and the initially formed isopropylidene glycerol chlorohydrin ether is reacted with a strongly alkaline base in a molar ratio of chlorohydrin ether to the alkaline base of 1.0:1.0 to 1.0:1.1, respectively, to givbe the 2,2-dimethyl-4-(2',3'-epoxy)propoxymethyl-1,3-dioxolane. This compound is suitable for use as an intermediate for the production of nonionic and/or ionic surfactants, as a reactive diluent and as an auxiliary solvent and auxiliary stabilizer.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyglycerols (with more than 50% by weight of diglycerol) which are low in cyclic components, by reacting glycerol with chlorohydrins. In this reaction, glycerol is reacted with epichlorohydrin (instead of chlorohydrin) at temperatures from 20.degree. to 120.degree. C. and at certain mole ratios of glycerol to epichlorohydrin and in the presence of an acidic catalyst and the reaction mixture obtained, which has not been separated into its components, is reacted at a temperature from 50.degree. C. to 120.degree. C. according to the content of organically bound chlorine in the reaction mixture, with an alkaline-reacting, preferably aqueous solution. After the addition of water, the reaction mixture is desalinated via one or more cation and subsequent anion exchangers, dehydrated by distillation and the glycerol-polyglycerol mixture obtained is separated by fractional distillation into glycerol, diglycerol and higher polyglycerols.

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for the preparation of polyglycerols (containing more than 50% by weight of diglycerol) which have a low content of cyclic components, by reacting chlorohydrins. In this reaction .alpha.-monochlorohydrin and epichlorohydrin are reacted at temperatures of 20.degree. to 120.degree. C., preferably 50.degree. C. to 100.degree. C., in a molar ratio of epichlorohydrin to .alpha.-monochlorohydrin of 0.8:1 to 1:2.5 in the presence of acids or compounds having an acid reaction. A medium having an alkaline reaction, preferably an aqueous solution having an alkaline reaction, is added to the resulting unseparated reaction mixture, at a temperature of 50.degree. C. to 120.degree. C., preferably 80.degree. C. to 95.degree. C. The amount of this addition is based on the content of organically-bound chlorine in the reaction mixture. After the addition of water, the reaction mixture is desalinated via one or more cation exchangers and subsequently anion exchangers.
