Abstract: A novel group of aminoglycosides which share some structural features of currently available aminoglycosides with regard to the backbone, while also having significant structural differences, is disclosed. The similarity enables these aminoglycosides to be highly potent and effective antibiotics, while the significant differences enable these aminoglycosides to reduce or even block antibiotic resistance. The aminoglycosides of the present invention are suitable for inhibition of antrax lethal factor, hence are suitable for use as a cure for anthrax.

Abstract: A method for distributed computing includes processing multiple sets of data at respective computing nodes (24), and calculating respective local values of one or more statistical parameters characterizing the sets of the data. A global condition is defined, such that the condition is violated when a function defined over a weighted average of the respective local values crosses a predetermined threshold. The global condition is separated into a plurality of local constraints, which include a respective local constraint to be evaluated by each of the nodes based on the respective local values, such that violation of the respective local constraint in at least one of the nodes indicates a violation of the global condition. The local constraint is evaluated independently at each of the nodes. When at least one of the nodes detects that the respective local constraint is violated, an indication that the global condition has been violated is produced.

Abstract: An organic electroluminescent device of a composite material that includes at least two emissive polymers confined into a layered inorganic host matrix, which effectively isolates the polymer chains from their neighbors, and a method for manufacturing same. The isolation of the emitting chains inhibits energy transfer and exciton diffusion between polymer chains, such that the electrically generated excitons recombine radiatively before their energy could be funneled to the emissive moiety with the lowest band gap. The emission color of such a composite is a combination of the emission of the confined polymers, and can be either white light, or can be tuned by selection of the ratio of the mixtures to output light of any desired color. The different polymers can either be mixed and then intercalated into the host matrix, or they can each be intercalated separately into the host matrix and the resulting composites mixed.

Abstract: The present invention provides HIV-derived lentivectors which are multiply modified to create highly safe, efficient, and potent vectors for expressing transgenes for gene therapy. The lentiviral vectors comprise various combinations of an inactive central polypurine tract, a stuffer sequence, which may encode drug susceptibility genes, and a mutated hairpin in the 5? leader sequence that substantially abolishes replication. These elements are provided in conjunction with other features of lentiviral vectors, such as a self-inactivating configuration for biosafety and promoters such as the EF1? promoter as one example. Additional promoters are also described. The vectors can also comprise additional transcription enhancing elements such as the wood chuck hepatitis virus post-transcriptional regulatory element.
Abstract: A method and pharmaceutical compositions useful for inhibiting the growth of solid tumors (e.g., skin caner) are provided. Specifically, the method is effected by administering to a subject in need thereof an agent capable of upregulating the expression level and/or activity of at least a functional portion of Sef, wherein the functional portion being capable of inhibiting RTK-mediated cell proliferation and whereas upregulating can be effected by: expressing in cells of the subject an exogenous polynucleotide encoding at least a functional portion of Sef (e.g., SEQ ID NOs:4, 8 or 9); increasing expression of endogenous Sef in cells of the subject; increasing endogenous Sef activity in cells of the subject; and introducing an exogenous peptide and/or exogenous polypeptide including at least a functional portion of Sef to the subject. Abstract: An ion concentration sensor produces a signal reflective of the ion concentration within a solution. The ion concentration sensor is based on an ion sensitive transistor having a solution input, a reference input, a diffusion input, and a diffusion output. The ion sensitive transistor is connected as a pass transistor, such that the diffusion output provides an electrical signal indicating an ion concentration in a solution contacting the solution input.

Abstract: Apparatus for obtaining 3-Dimensional data of a geometric body for matching, and particularly for use in facial matching, comprises a three dimensional scanner for obtaining three-dimensional topographical data of the body, a triangulator for receiving or forming said data into a triangulated manifold, a geodesic converter, for converting the triangulated manifold into a series of geodesic distances between pairs of points of the manifold, and a multi-dimensional scaler, for forming a low dimensional Euclidean representation of the series of geodesic distances, to give a bending invariant representation of the geometric body. In one variant, matching is carried out by taking the principle eigenvalues from the representation and plotting as co-ordinates in a feature space. Tilted or different expression versions of the same face tend to form clusters in the feature space allowing for matching. The apparatus preferably uses the fast marching method for the triangulated domain to obtain the geodesic distances.
