Patent number: 12194588Abstract: A robotic sharpening system and method for rapidly and accurately sharpening or resharpening cutting tools is provided. The inventive system employs a robotic arm that grasps each cutting tool by its cutting blade instead of by its handle, thereby reducing flex during the sharpening process. This results in a more accurate and consistent sharpening by consistently providing an even bevel at the knife edge regardless of minor imperfections (i.e., a bend or warp) in the blade surface. In addition, it renders the system uninfluenced by the size or shape of the handle of the cutting tool.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2021Date of Patent: January 14, 2025Assignee: Dexter-Russell, Inc.Inventors: Thomas J. Kennedy, David F. Bentley, Chinmay Harmalkar, Tyler Kelly

Publication number: 20230281415Abstract: A tool having a detectable wireless marker or tag is provided. The tool has a working portion with a projection or tang by which the working portion of the tool is held, a wireless tag located on, but insulated from the tang, and a handle disposed over and encompassing the projection or tang and the wireless tag. In an exemplary embodiment, the wireless tag is insulated from the tang using a housing assembly made up of: an enclosure with a side opening for receiving a detectable wireless tag; a cover that securely fits over the side opening; and a snap-fit assembly component integrally formed on an outer surface of the enclosure for receiving a tools' tang. The invention allows for the use of fragile markers or tags, which are protected by the housing assembly from temperatures and pressures used during, for example, tool handle manufacturing processes. Also provided is a method for providing a tool with a detectable wireless tag, and a method for tracking and tracing tools used within a packaging facility.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2023Publication date: September 7, 2023Applicant: Dexter-Russell, Inc.Inventors: Gary P. Goguen, Thomas J. Kennedy, Joshua Polunina-Proulx

The tool has a working portion with a projection or tang by which the working portion of the tool is held, a wireless tag located on, but insulated from the tang, and a handle disposed over and encompassing the projection or tang and the wireless tag. In an exemplary embodiment, the wireless tag is insulated from the tang using a housing assembly made up of an inner holder, an outer holder, and the detectable wireless tag positioned between the inner and outer holders. The invention allows for the use of fragile markers or tags, which are protected by the housing assembly from temperatures and pressures used during, for example, tool handle manufacturing processes. Also provided is a method for providing a tool with a detectable wireless tag, and a method for tracking and tracing tools used within a packaging facility.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2021Date of Patent: June 6, 2023Assignee: Dexter-Russell, Inc.Inventor: Gary P. Patent number: 8615888Abstract: A knife has a handle with an enlarged proximate end grip portion having ribbed and unribbed surfaces. The handle has oppositely disposed thumb receiving concave unribbed surfaces at the distal end for alternate pinch-grip functions. The knife blade has a cutting edge that extends proximately below and adjacent the enlarged grip portion, and is proximately disposed with respect to the thumb receiving pinch-grip concave surfaces. The knife provides diverse impaired grip cutting functions with comfort and with fatigue.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2009Date of Patent: December 31, 2013Assignee: Dexter-Russell, Inc.Inventors: Carol Catalano, Aaron Double

Publication number: 20120009857Abstract: A meat scoring or cutting implement having a thin, elongated blade lying along a blade longitudinal axis that is curved along its length, to define a bend or curve in the blade. The blade defines opposing side surfaces that meet at an acute angle to thereby define a cutting edge along at least a portion of the length of the blade. The blade further defines a tip at one end, the tip at least in part defined by an end wall that lies at an obtuse angle to the cutting edge.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 7, 2010Publication date: January 12, 2012Applicant: Dexter-Russell, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey Allen Harden, Alan Scot Peppel

Patent number: 6598302Abstract: An ergonomic handle for a poultry knife has an elongated handle with a longitudinal axis, a curved upper grip surface extending away from the axis and a lower grip surface in about parallel disposition with the axis, and the lower grip surface is formed with a downwardly depending planar wall for engaging the back of the index finger. The wall is perpendicularly disposed to the longitudinal axis.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2000Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: Dexter-Russell, Inc.Inventors: Alan S. Peppel, Laurie A. Lapierre
