Patent number: 6845767Abstract: A saw blade of uniform abrasive segments with undercut protection to prevent loss of segments and to extend blade life. A metal core includes a uniform peripheral contour formed as a series of spaced apart, segment mounting sections separated by radial gullet channels. A diamond cutting segment is securely bonded to each such mounting section at a bonding interface between the segment and the metal core. Adjacent the ends of each segment on opposite sides of successive gullet channels, are upstanding ears which at least register with and extend through the radial arc of the bonding interface between the segments and the metal core. Both the upstanding ears and the region beneath each segment are preferably overcoated with a wear protection material such as carbide. The overcoated region beneath each segment includes a contoured edge to assist in directing swarf away from the cutting groove.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2002Date of Patent: January 25, 2005Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventor: Metin Sakarcan

Patent number: 5809985Abstract: A concrete saw is provided having an engine aligned along a longitudinal axis of the saw frame to minimize the width of the saw and provide a more balanced system. A clutch assembly is attached to a forward end of the engine to disengage the saw blade without stopping the engine. A right angle gear box is provided proximate the driven side of the clutch assembly to transfer driving rotational forces from the engine to a transversely aligned driven shaft. The driven shaft includes drive pulleys mounted upon opposite ends thereof, which are aligned with driven pulleys mounted upon opposite ends of a blade support shaft and linked to one another via multiple belts. This alignment evenly balances the load transfer while facilitating the use of vibration isolators between the engine, gear box and frame. A hydraulically controlled depth stop mechanism is included for setting a maximum cut depth. The engine speed is controlled by an electronic governor.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1997Date of Patent: September 22, 1998Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventors: Michael G. Kingsley, Kevin R. Patent number: 5749353Abstract: A saw blade is provided which includes an inner collar separated from an outer collar with a resilient isolated layer. The inner collar fastens to the arbor shaft of a driving motor, while the outer collar is welded to the rim containing hardened particles, such as diamond bits. The inner and outer collars form inner and outer collar flanges which receive the resilient isolating material therebetween. In an alternative embodiment, the inner and outer collars are separated from one another with a plurality of plugs formed of resilient isolating material. The plurality of plugs are formed in a circular pattern about the arbor shaft and are spaced apart from one another. In another embodiment, a vibration dampening coupler is fastened to the arbor shaft and formed separate from the cutting blade. The isolating resilient layer may be formed as a solid layer, as a plurality of O-rings, or with a void therein.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1996Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventors: Charles E. Patent number: 5743247Abstract: A concrete saw is provided which utilizes a transmission having both forward and reverse, high and low speed ranges separated by a neutral state. The transmission includes a neutral start switch which prevents the engine from being started, while the transmission is in gear. An automatic parking brake assembly is mounted to the frame proximate the drive wheel. The brake assembly fixedly engages the drive wheel when the ignition switch is turned to the off position, when the battery is disengaged or when the battery is dead. The brake assembly also immobilizes the drive wheel whenever the transmission is shifted to the neutral state regardless of the position of the ignition switch. The system is provided with an override switch to bypass the automatic application of the brake assembly when the transmission is placed in neutral to facilitate winching or otherwise rolling the saw without engine power. Normally, the brake assembly disengages when the transmission is shifted from neutral into gear.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1995Date of Patent: April 28, 1998Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventors: Michael G. Patent number: 5480081Abstract: A tile cutting apparatus includes a unit base for holding a tile and guide rods above and running parallel to the base. The guide rods carry a scoring/breaking assembly along a scoring and breaking path. The base includes, on its upper surface, a breaker spline inserted therein and extending along the scoring path. The base's upper surface also includes resilient pads supporting stainless steel rest plates on both sides of the breaker spline. The spline is oriented at a slight angle with respect to the surface of the rest plates to facilitate breaking. The scoring/breaking assembly includes a spring for applying constant pressure to a cutting wheel throughout the scoring operation. The scoring/breaking assembly is constructed such that a single handle allows the user to engage and disengage the cutting wheel, score the tile while maintaining a constant scoring pressure and break the tile. The apparatus includes a molded cover and base that minimize excess assembly and parts.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1993Date of Patent: January 2, 1996Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventors: Kevin R. Patent number: 5477844Abstract: A slurry recovery system for a wet cutting saw which includes a watering section, a containment section, a gas-liquid separator section and a discharge section. The watering section contains a pressure gauge, shut-off valve and flowmeter to control the flow of liquid onto the saw blade. The containment section includes a blade cover and bellows which surround the saw blade and form a sawing chamber. A drag bar, which is attached to the lower surface of the bellow, skids along the cutting surface and removes the slurry therefrom. The drag bar includes inner and outer flexible walls that create a vacuum chamber around the saw. The slurry is vacuumed out of the vacuum chamber and conveyed to a gas-liquid separator tank, wherein the slurry and air are separated. The slurry passes to a diaphragm pump and the air passes to a discharge blower. The separator tank includes a blower protector which contains a float and seals.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1993Date of Patent: December 26, 1995Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventor: Donald F. Patent number: 5471970Abstract: A method is provided for manufacturing a segmented diamond blade. The method includes the steps of placing a core into a mold and pouring a metal mixture into a mold cavity surrounding the core. The metal mixture is cold pressed to the core to form a blade having a continuous outer rim. Thereafter, the core and outer rim are suspended in a free-sintering furnace which is heated to an initial diffusion bonding temperature. The core and outer rim are heated for an initial bonding time period. Thereafter, the furnace is heated to a final diffusion bonding temperature and the core and outer rim are maintained at this temperature for a final diffusion bonding time period. After the blade cools, it is placed in a cutting tool and segmented. During segmentation, a plurality of radially aligned notches are cut through the outer rim and a corresponding plurality of gullets are cut in the core. During cutting, an inert gas, such as helium, argon or the like, is blown under high pressure directly onto the cutting point.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1994Date of Patent: December 5, 1995Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventor: Metin Sakarcan

Patent number: 5381780Abstract: A saw for grooving concrete includes a base supported by plurality of wheels such that a cutting guide of the base may press against the green concrete with a predetermined load. A cutter frame is pivotally mounted to the base and includes a cutting blade and drive means mounted thereto. The pivotal connection between the frame and the base is spaced from the cutting blade such that pivoting the frame with respect to the base will raise and lower the cutting blade between operative and inoperative positions. A handle is connected to the saw and extends rearwardly and upwardly therefrom such that an operator may stand behind the saw to push it during operation. The handle is pivotally mounted to the saw such that pushing the handle downwardly will cause the frame to pivot upwardly with respect to the base. The handle is telescopic and includes a pivot connection such that it may be folded to a storage or travel position.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1993Date of Patent: January 17, 1995Assignee: Diamant Boart, Inc.Inventors: Darrell A.
