Abstract: A video clip is captured from a television broadcast on each of a plurality of channels. The captured video clips are provided to a display interface, which successively displays the captured video clips within a focus area of a user interface in response to an initiating action by a user. The display interface then discontinues the successive display of video clips to show a particular video clip corresponding to a selected channel in response to a terminating action by the user.

Abstract: An apparatus is described comprising: a decode unit which receives an encoded interlaced video signal including encoded interframe motion compensation data, and responsively transmits a decoded interlaced video signal and associated interframe motion compensation data; and a de-interlace unit which converts the interlaced video signal to a progressive video signal, and which, responsive to the interframe motion compensation data, selects a region of the interlaced video signal for a different type of conversion, the selection based on the change in position of the region between successive video frames.
Abstract: A system for processing multimedia channels is described comprising: transmitting decryption keys for decrypting the multimedia channels, the keys encrypted in both a first encryption format and a second encryption format; the keys encrypted in the first encryption format being decryptable by a first type of multimedia receiver; and the keys encrypted in the second encryption format being decryptable by a second type of multimedia receiver.
Abstract: A highly scalable primary server is provided to serve an increasing number of users and remote devices. Instead of communicating with a primary server using an expensive communication protocol, a remote device communicates with a secondary server using a less expensive protocol to determine whether the primary server desires to communicate control instructions to the remote device. When the primary server has a request to control the remote device, the primary server creates a table entry to the secondary server to notify the remote device of a request to communicate. Upon polling the secondary server and learning of the created table entry, the remote device establishes a communication connection with the primary server to receive the instructions for controlling the remote device. In this manner, the demand for resources needed for communication with the primary server is significantly reduced.
Abstract: A sequence of cards representing filters is displayed along a first axis of a user interface with a single card being displayed in a focus area. The card in the focus area defines a selected object type filter, which is applied to another sequence of available options. The filtered sequence is then displayed along another (perpendicular) axis of the user interface, which only includes options corresponding to the selected option type filter.

Abstract: A remote control for a digital video recorder includes an integrated display screen configured to display a recording list including programs scheduled to be recorded.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method and apparatus for extracting digital data from a medium. Digital audio extraction techniques are implemented with additional features that improve the quality of the resulting audio playback files. In one embodiment of the invention, a user can extract digital audio data from a source medium and store the data as a file or, alternatively, stream the data into a memory. The file/stream can then be analyzed to determine the precise locations, in time, at which the sound levels represented by the data cross a specified threshold, particularly at locations near and between track edges. This information can be stored for reference. Subsequently, the file/stream can be accurately divided into smaller files wherein each file contains one or more complete and distinct tracks, and the data representing sound levels below the specified threshold can be excluded from the resulting files. The files may then be encoded and/or further divided into standard playback files.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are described for mapping a plurality of multimedia streams (e.g., received from a set of satellite transponders) across a lesser plurality of decoders. In one embodiment, arbitration logic allocates the multimedia streams to divide the decoding load equally among the group of decoders (or at least as equally as possible). Allocation may occur statically, when the system is initialized, or dynamically, as the streams are being processed. In addition, in one embodiment, the arbitration logic monitors the amount of multimedia data for each stream stored in a buffer and causes streams to be serviced by the decoders which have relatively more stored multimedia data.
Abstract: A set top box for use in interactive television systems includes a generation engine and a display engine. The generation engine automatically stores channel favorites in a channel favorites table. The generation engine may include cumulative viewing time for each channel in the table as well as the number of times each channel in the table has been viewed. The display engine, upon request, displays a list of channels in the channel favorites tables according to a viewer order preference.
Abstract: A remote control for a digital video recorder includes an integrated display screen configured to display a list of programs. The list may be an EPG, a list of programs to be recorded, or a list of recorded programs. A user can navigate through the list to select a television program, as well as various digital recording/playback operations to be performed for the selected television program.
Abstract: Video data encoded according to new compression standards may be processed by an existing client terminal using an adaptive module that transcodes the video data into a format compatible with the processing capabilities of the client terminal. Further, the adaptive module may compress video files stored in the client terminal according to a new or advanced compression standard, in order to expand the storage capacity of the hard drive of the client terminal. Further still, the adaptive module may support high-resolution graphic video streams (e.g., for interactive games) by including a graphics engine and encoder to render the video streams compatible for processing by the client terminal. Thus, broadband content providers are spared the expense of upgrading the decoder and/or hard drive of their subscribers' terminals, if not the entire client altogether, in view of evolving compression standards.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method is described for processing multimedia channels comprising: encrypting a first group of multimedia channels using a first type of encryption to produce a first group of encrypted multimedia channels; encrypting the first group of multimedia channels using a second type of encryption to produce a second group of encrypted multimedia channels; concurrently transmitting the first group of encrypted multimedia channels with the second group of multimedia channels to a plurality of multimedia subscribers having multimedia receivers capable of decrypting the first group of encrypted multimedia channels and/or the second group of multimedia channels.
Abstract: A system and method are described for providing drift compensation for a multimedia receiver which processes multimedia streams from a plurality of satellite transponders and/or cable/broadcast carriers. In one embodiment, the average drift amount for all multimedia signals in a first group of multimedia signals is calculated and, based on the calculation, the drift of the entire group is corrected. This drift is referred to as system drift. In addition, the difference in drift between each individual multimedia signal and the system drift amount is used to correct the individual drift for each multimedia signal.
Abstract: Within a personal computer media center, a user interface module generates graphical commands representing a user interface. A network interface then sends the graphical commands via a home network to a media center extension, where a display interface renders the graphical commands into the user interface on a television. In one configuration, the user interface includes a focus area intersected by a first axis, as well as a first sequence of cards displayed along the first axis, each card graphically representing an available option, one card being displayable within the focus area. The first sequence of cards is to be scrolled along the first axis in response to an initiating action to progressively change the card within the focus area. Furthermore, the scrolling of cards is to be halted in response to a terminating action to show a selected card from the first sequence within the focus area.

Abstract: An Internet-enabled television system provides an electronic program guide for the radio (radio EPG) depicting radio programs available via the Internet. The radio EPG displays the programming available for a plurality of radio stations and time slots. The radio EPG is interactive in that a user may select a radio program for immediate playback or future recording. Radio programs are continuously received and cached by the Internet-enabled television system such that a user may be able to select and listen to an earlier-broadcast radio program listed in the radio EPG.
Abstract: A system and method are described for allowing cable operators to actively block, pass through, modify, append, filter, or replace triggers corresponding to various forms of enhanced content being transmitted across a cable system. Accordingly, cable operators may offer enhanced content customized for their subscribers and earn additional fees for local advertising and other closely allied services.

Abstract: An editing device accesses a media program and a user of the editing device designates points of interest within the media program. Bookmarks are generated for the designated points of interest. The bookmarks are transmitted via a network from the editing device to a playback device. During presentation of the media program, the playback device uses the bookmarks to skip to one position of interest to another, as defined by the bookmarks, in response to user commands.
