  • Patent number: 8755667
Abstract: A recording playback device having a database of recordings with titles, automatically enters a title input mode upon receiving character input from a user while a recording is being played if the there is not title in the database for the recording. Playback of the recording is not interrupted in the title input mode. In the case of a DVD player, the on-screen display mode is used to display the characters entered by the user on the same video display used for video content from the DVD.

  • Patent number: 7734850
Abstract: A system and method are provided for storing and using recovery state information during a data stream transfer, such as a download. During the download of compressed, archived data, the system tracks the position of the last file boundary and the position of the last compression block boundary before the last file boundary, and the system stores this information as a recovery state. If the download is interrupted, the system uses the recovery state information to resume the download at an efficient location in the data stream.

  • Patent number: 7356246
Abstract: A digital video recorder (DVR) is user-configurable to start recording before a scheduled start of a program. The DVR displays an electronic program guide having a graphical indicator that the DVR is configured to start recording a program early. When a user commands the DVR to play back the recorded program, the DVR begins playing the program at the position corresponding to the scheduled start time, as opposed to the actual recording start time. If desired, the user can “rewind” the program and view the portions of the program recorded prior to the scheduled start time. The DVR can display a counter counting the time base for the recorded program. The counter displays time elapsed since the scheduled start time and counts portions of the program recorded before the scheduled start time as negative time.

  • Publication number: 20080066012
Abstract: A method and system for selection of recordable events from among a set of recordable events, based on categories and sub-categories, that cumulatively describe a substantial portion of the entire set of recordable events. After receiving a first set of categories, and first sets of sub-categories corresponding to the first set of categories, at a device, the device is configured to use the first set of categories and the first set of sub-categories, to guide a user in selecting a series of recordable events to experience and/or record. Thereafter, the device receives a second set of categories and respective second sets of sub-categories that correspond to the categories of the second set of categories, and the device responsively configures itself to use the second set of categories and the second sets of sub-categories, to guide a user in selecting a series of recordable events to experience and/or record.

  • Patent number: 7251413
Abstract: Systems and methods for providing enhanced navigation of stored digital video content based upon an event index. Includes generation and storage of an event index, as well as navigation based on events in the event index. An example system is embodied in a digital video recorder that detects and stores black field and silent frame events for use in locating commercial groups. The commercial groups may be skipped or otherwise navigated based upon data pointers linking the stored events to corresponding locations in the video data file. Generation of the event index may involve comparing a luminance value for each frame to a luminance threshold value for a video presentation. The luminance threshold value may be based upon a transition point between a first group of luminance values corresponding to video content and a second group of luminance values corresponding to transition events, such as black fields.

  • Publication number: 20070168287
Abstract: A system for rendering media content in accordance with the invention includes a first platform for storing media content, wherein the media content comprises an unrenderable state when received by the first platform. The system further includes a second platform that is communicatively coupled with the first platform for rendering the stored media content. The first and second platforms cooperatively provide an interface for purchasing a right to render the stored, protected media content at least one time. In the system, at least one of the first and second platforms is operable to convert the stored media content to a renderable state upon the purchase of the right to render.

  • Patent number: 7203773
Abstract: A method and apparatus for using a control port in accordance with a variety of different protocols. A main processor communicates a configuration instruction to an interface controller. The interface controller uses the configuration instruction to select a protocol driver and to process signals to a control signal processor. The signals to the control signal processor include an output signal, an input signal, a direction signal, and a modulation enable signal. The control signal processor uses the direction signal to determine whether to output data or input data. The control signal processor uses the modulation enable signal to determine whether to couple a carrier signal on a transition from one digital level to another. The interface controller outputs data in accordance with a selected protocol and processes data input in accordance with the selected protocol.

  • Publication number: 20060262813
Abstract: A system for streaming a plurality of video or other recorded signals from storage to receiving devices maintains each of the signal streams at their encoded bit rate. The bit rate of each stream is detected from the stored signals and a corresponding queue is set up in memory or in a network interface card for outputting data at the detected bit rate. A channel timing module in the signal streaming device contains a two-stage dithered counter for each bit rate. The first stage of the counter counts one clock cycle longer than the second stage. By adjusting the ratio of the first stage and second stage counters in a fixed number of cycles (the dither cycle) a very precise average count is achieved. The average count is calculated to achieve the desired bit rate with a given packet size. Every time either the first stage of the second counter times out, a packet of data is sent to the corresponding queue in the network interface.

  • Publication number: 20060184984
Abstract: A method and a system for intelligent indexing of recordable event identifiers that improve user satisfaction in searching for recordable events or recorded events. Intelligent indexing of recordable event identifiers permits the indexing of recordable event identifiers based on the most likely methods that any of a plurality of users may use to enter data for performing a search for a recordable event or a recorded event. The intelligent indexing of recordable events allows any given user to use any of the most likely methods for entering data for use in searching for a recordable event or a recorded event, instead of being restricted to a single method for entering data to be used in performing a search for a recordable event or recorded event.

  • Publication number: 20060146436
Abstract: A method and system for displaying identifiers for one or more series of recordable events is described. A system, such as the system of a digital video recorder, may receive a set of recordable events data, such as a listing of all television shows to be broadcast over a two-week period. The system analyzes the set of recordable events data for determining one or more sets of recordable events, where each set includes recordable events having the same title. The system analyzes each set of recordable events to determine sub-sets of recordable events based on relationships between the recordable events of each sub-set. The system displays an identifier for each sub-set of a given set of recordable events when the given set of recordable events is selected for display. A user may select to record a sub-set of recordable events by selecting the identifier that represents the sub-set.
