Patent number: 8355019Abstract: A 3D viewing system captures offset images from off-axis camera perspectives inclined to a normal of base plane of a scene that includes one or more objects projecting from the base plane. The offset images, which take a planar form, are displayed from a display surface at an off-axis viewing perspective that is inclined to a normal of the display surface similar to the inclination of the off-axis camera perspective to the normal of the base plane. The offset images undergo a distortion to counteract a keystone distortion associated with the off-axis viewing perspective. The base plane of the scene is oriented parallel to the display surface, and the objects projecting from the base plane appear to project from the display surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2007Date of Patent: January 15, 2013Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jesse B. Patent number: 8189129Abstract: The backlight system of the invention creates illumination behind a liquid crystal or other transparent display. In one mode of operation it produces a series of precise, thin slanted lines with dark space in between which are used to make multiple perspective views, displayed simultaneously on the LCD, visible from a series of horizontally spaced viewing zones spaced in front of the display. In another mode of operation, it produces even diffuse illumination similar to that generated by conventional backlights, allowing the LCD to display conventional 2D images.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2009Date of Patent: May 29, 2012Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jesse B. Patent number: 6590605Abstract: An autostereoscopic display includes an image forming device and a substrate having alternating strips, where strips having a first optical property are separated by strips having a different optical property. This substrate may be composed of alternating strips of polarization film separated by clear, nonpolarizing strips. Alternately, this substrate may be composed of first alternating strips that retard a component of linearly polarized light by one-half wavelength, separated by second alternating strips that retard a component of linearly polarized light by one wavelength. A removable, separate polarizing substrate may be removably placed in front of the substrate containing the alternating strips. When the removable polarizing substrate is placed in front of the strips in a certain orientation, autostereoscopic imaging is viewed by the observer, and when this polarizing substrate is removed, 2D imaging is viewed.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1999Date of Patent: July 8, 2003Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jesse B. Patent number: 6157424Abstract: An improved 2D/3D display is disclosed. In one embodiment, the display uses both an imaging LCD and a secondary LCD. The secondary LCD is a light line forming LCD which can be placed between a light line forming system and the imaging LCD for eliminating ghost images, or can be used as the light line forming system itself. Variations of a glass sandwich employing an imaging liquid crystal layer and a line forming liquid crystal layer are disclosed. Alternatively, the secondary LCD may comprise a liquid crystal layer and a series of polarizing strips. Displays in which a 2D or 3D window can be viewed within a 3D or 2D window, respectively, are disclosed using light line forming systems and alternatively using light line forming LCD's which have the opaque stripes divided into individually controllable areas. Movement of one window within another window is disclosed. Also disclosed is a strip diffuser for improving visual characteristics in 3D mode and movable elements for alternating between 2D and 3D mode.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1998Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jesse B. Patent number: 5897184Abstract: A reduced-thickness backlighter for an autostereoscopic display is disclosed having a lightguide and at least one light source parallel to an edge of the lightguide so as to be substantially coplanar with the lightguide. The lightguide is provided with a first surface which has a plurality of reflective linear regions, such as elongated grooves or glossy lines, parallel to the illuminated edge of the lightguide. Preferably the lightguide further has a second surface which has a plurality of lenticular lenses for reimaging the reflected light from the linear regions into a series of thin vertical lines outside the guide. Because of the reduced thickness of the backlighter system, autostereoscopic viewing is enabled in applications requiring thin backlighter systems. In addition to taking up less space, the reduced-thickness backlighter uses less lamps and less power.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1996Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Jesse B Eichenlaub, Russell W Gruhlke

Patent number: 5606455Abstract: An autostereoscopic display is disclosed having an optical system and one or more light sources which provide high brightness of the observed three-dimensional images and high brightness-to-input-power ratio by having the light beam passing through the optical system (including a flat monochrome or color display panel) directed to the observer's eyes, instead of being diffused across the field of view.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: February 25, 1997Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jesse B. Patent number: 5500765Abstract: A convertible 2D/3D autostereoscopic display includes of an electronically controllable display screen for displaying two dimensional images thereon and a permanently mounted first lens sheet for projecting 3D autostereoscopic images in a region of space in front of the display. Another lens sheet is pivotally attached to the display to allow it to be swung into and out of physical optical engagement with the first lens sheet. The lens sheets each have complimentary physical structure and optical properties such that when the lens sheets are engaged, the combined lens sheets have a substantially negligible effect on the two dimensional screen image; while disengagement of the lens sheets resumes the display to the 3D autostereoscopic display mode. Complimentary alignment structure is also provided in corresponding non-lens regions of the lens sheets for aligning the respective lenslets when the sheets are engaged. Conventional latches are also provided to secure the lens sheets when they are engaged.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1994Date of Patent: March 19, 1996Assignee: Dimension Technologies Inc.Inventor: Jesse B. Patent number: 5428366Abstract: A field sequential color illumination system for liquid crystal displays is described which focuses light from a plurality of small point like or line like light sources into subregions of pixels of an LCD by a fly's eye lens, in such a manner that at any given time, red, blue, and green light spots are focused simultaneously into different pixels. Furthermore, during each subsequent field, light spots are focused into different sub sections of each pixel in such a way that each pixel receives red, green, and blue illumination sequentially during each set of three fields. During each field, each pixel is addressed and made to display the appropriate transmittance level to display the appropriate red, green, or blue color level for its location on the red, blue, or green color component of the image just prior to illumination of a sub region by a red, green, or blue light source.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1993Date of Patent: June 27, 1995Assignee: Dimension Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jesse B.
