Patent number: 7867183Abstract: Embodiments of the knee brace disclosed herein provide a combination of external ligament support and/or relief from pain caused by osteoarthritis with patellofemoral support. The brace includes a rigid frame and a flexible strap configured to extend across the wearer's patella to provide anterior loading thereto. The strap is operatively secured at either end to components of the rigid frame, thereby providing maximum leverage for applying force to the wearer's patella. In some embodiments, the strap includes a removable and adjustable buttress for directly contacting the wearer's patella. The patellar strap provides dynamic loading to the patella through the wearer's range of motion for relief of patellofemoral dysfunction, such as patellar shift, subluxation and dislocation, and malalignments such as patella alta, patella baja, tilt and glide.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2006Date of Patent: January 11, 2011Assignee: DJ Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Andy Kazmierczak, John Martin, Richard E. Patent number: 7128723Abstract: An orthopedic brace having length adjustable supports is provided. The brace comprises upper and lower supports rotatably connected by a hinge. Each of the supports comprises an elongate portion having a channel along part of its length, and a sliding upright that nests within the channel. The upright is incrementally longitudinally translatable within the channel so that the length of the support is adjustable. Flanges are provided along the edges of the channel to prevent lateral separation of the upright from the stationary portion. A spring-biased button protrudes from an upper surface of the channel. The button cooperates with one of a plurality of holes in the upright, providing a positive lock to retain the upright in one of a number of predetermined positions within the channel. The upright is also completely removable from the channel. Removal of the upright from the channel shortens the brace. Straps cooperate with brackets on the supports and/or uprights to secure the brace to a patient's leg.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2004Date of Patent: October 31, 2006Assignee: DJ Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Del Ray Doty, Alexis Laurand Erwin

Patent number: 7097627Abstract: An orthopaedic brace includes a strut length adjustment assembly to change the operable length of the strut for sizing the brace on a patient without the need for special tools or cutting of the strut. The adjustment assembly includes a biased adjustment mechanism that coacts with a plurality of notches in the strut to variably set/position the strut relative to the adjustment assembly to set the struts length. Each upper and lower strut preferably includes a strut length adjustment assembly to independently set the length of each strut. The strut length adjustment assembly retains a strut and includes a strap retention mechanism that is configured to releasably engage the strap.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2002Date of Patent: August 29, 2006Assignee: dj Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Robert-Jan Enzerink, James Gregory Finkes, Jeffrey Lee Telles

Patent number: 7083586Abstract: A patellofemoral brace including a buttress for supporting a wearer's patella is provided. The patellofemoral brace includes an elastic sleeve that is easy to apply to the wearer's leg and easy to remove from the wearer's leg. The sleeve includes distinct bands of material so that end bands are substantially rotationally independent of a central band. The end bands resist translation along and rotation about the wearer's leg. The brace further includes a tensioning strap that lies across the buttress to further support the buttress and the wearer's patella. A portion of the tensioning strap is constructed of a thermoplastic elastomer, so that the strap provides firmer support to the buttress than a fabric strap, but is more comfortable and more evenly supports the buttress than a hard, inelastic strap.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2003Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Assignee: dj Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Richard Royle Simmons, John P. Patent number: 6878126Abstract: The present invention provides an improved knee brace that is configured to improve comfort to the user and reduce interference with the natural motion of the user's leg. The knee brace has rigid upper and lower frames that are connected together by polycentric hinges. The rigid upper frame is contoured such that no rigid structure is located along the medial superior region of the thigh. The rigid upper and lower frames are secured to the leg using a plurality of straps.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2003Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: dj Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Kim Alex Nelson, Lonnie E. Publication number: 20050010147Abstract: Abstract of the Disclosure A shoulder sling is provided for the treatment of, for example, gleno-humeral dislocations and subluxations, capsular shifts, postoperative rotator cuff repair, postoperative Bankart procedures and soft tissue strains and repairs. The sling includes a support pillow abuts the wearer's torso, and a pouch that receives the wearer's arm. A plurality of straps suspend the pillow and pouch from the wearer's non-treatment shoulder. One of the straps prevents the pillow from shifting relative to the user, thus securely maintaining the wearer's arm at desired angles of abduction and external rotation. The pillow further includes an attached exercise grip and an indicator line that aids a physician in properly fitting the sling to the wearer.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 15, 2003Publication date: January 13, 2005Applicant: dj Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Andy Kazmierczak, Stephen Snyder, Eric McCarty, Colin Gregersen, Nancy Halchuk, Alfredo Cesena

Patent number: 6752775Abstract: A brace hinge is provided having an adjustable pressure-applying assembly mounted to an inside of the hinge. A brace including the hinge can apply pressure to a joint in a medial or lateral direction. The hinge includes anterior and posterior apertures containing anterior and posterior adjustment members that control a position and orientation of the pressure-applying assembly relative to the hinge. Through selective adjustment of the adjustment members, the hinge can apply greater pressure to an anterior portion of the joint than to a posterior portion of the joint, and vice versa. A method of treating a joint using a brace including such a hinge is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2002Date of Patent: June 22, 2004Assignee: dj Orthopedics, LLCInventors: Scott Seligman, Emee Villegas
