Patent number: 8517965Abstract: An orthopedic brace having length adjustable supports is provided. The brace comprises upper and lower supports rotatably connected by a hinge. Each of the supports comprises an elongate portion having a channel along part of its length, and a sliding upright nesting within the channel. The upright is longitudinally translatable within the channel so that the support length is adjustable. Flanges are provided along edges of the channel to prevent lateral separation of the upright from the channel. A spring-biased button protrudes from a surface of the channel. The button cooperates with one of a plurality of holes in the upright, providing a positive lock to retain the upright in one of a number of predetermined positions. The upright is also completely removable from the channel. Removal of the upright shortens the brace. Straps cooperate with brackets on the supports and/or uprights to secure the brace to a patient's leg.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2005Date of Patent: August 27, 2013Assignee: DJO, LLCInventors: Del Ray Doty, Alexis Erwin Doty

Publication number: 20130211300Abstract: A hinged ankle brace having a semi-rigid ankle cuff and a semi-rigid foot bed rotatably connected by a medial hinge and a lateral hinge provides enhanced stability and support to a wearer's ankle. The medial hinge of the ankle brace may be higher than the lateral hinge to accurately replicate the bending motion of an ankle. The ankle brace also includes ratchetably interconnected semi-rigid straps. These semi-rigid straps provide a semi-rigid structure encircling the ankle of a wearer for enhanced support. The ratchet mechanism may include a curved window that enables angular adjustment of the ratchting straps. The ankle brace may also include a soft inner liner and a soft outer sleeve. The outer sleeve is configured to provide compression to the semi-rigid shell, which in turn provides additional compression to the ankle. The semi-rigid foot bed may include posterior extensions that cup and support the wearer's heel, and a posterior cut-out portion that receives the wearer's heel.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2013Publication date: August 15, 2013Applicant: DJO, LLCInventor: DJO, LLC

Publication number: 20110314637Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for adjusting rotational limits of an orthopedic brace hinge are provided. A hinge stop assembly limits rotational travel of first and second frame members of the hinge. An indexing key of the hinge stop assembly is actuatable in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the hinge to lock and unlock the position of the hinge stop assembly relative to the hinge. Actuation of the hinge stop assembly unlocks the indexing key and allows movement of the hinge stop assembly to set a desired limit on the flexion or extension of the brace hinge. Release of the hinge stop assembly locks the indexing key and locks the hinge stop assembly in place.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2011Publication date: December 29, 2011Applicant: DJO, LLCInventors: Robert Bejarano, Emee Villegas, Carl Hoffmeier

Patent number: 8062242Abstract: A hinge assembly is provided for an orthopedic knee brace. The knee brace includes upper and lower support arms. The hinge assembly includes a hinge plate and first and second gear members pivotally connected to the hinge plate. The first gear member is coupled for rotation with the upper support arm and has an articulation surface adjacent a surface of the upper support arm. The second gear member is coupled for rotation with the lower support arm and has an articulation surface adjacent a surface of the lower support arm. The hinge assembly allows medial/lateral articulation of the upper and lower support arms in a plane substantially perpendicular to a plane of rotation of the first and second gear members.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2007Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: DJO, LLCInventors: Dylann D. Patent number: 8043243Abstract: Disclosed is a knee brace that incorporates hinges that allow the brace to pivot simultaneously about a flexion-extension axis and a longitudinal rotation axis as the brace flexes and/or extends. The hinges include a medial hinge and a lateral hinge. The medial hinge defines a medial pivot axis and the lateral hinge defines a lateral pivot axis. The medial pivot axis does not coincide with the lateral pivot axis, and neither axis coincides with the flexion-extension axis. Calf portions of each hinge are pivotable with respect to their respective uprights about an axis that is substantially parallel to the longitudinal rotation axis. The pivotability of the calf portions with respect to the calf frame eliminates stresses that would otherwise develop in the hinges as the brace flexes and/or extends.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2005Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: DJO, LLCInventors: Jeremy J. Nathanson, Richard E. Gildersleeve

Patent number: 7967765Abstract: Provided are apparatus and methods of securing an orthopedic brace on a wearer such that the brace is unlikely to migrate. In preferred embodiments, the apparatus includes a band that extends entirely around the wearer, making contact with the entire circumference of the wearer. In certain embodiments, a strap secured to the brace threads through loops on the band, thereby operably connecting the brace and the band. In certain other embodiments, the apparatus further includes a belt that overlaps the band. Suspenders operably connect the brace to the band/belt. Because the band makes contact with the entire circumference of the wearer, the apparatus comfortably secures the brace to the wearer while effectively preventing migration of the brace and without hindering the intended function of the brace.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2004Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: DJO, LLCInventor: Jeremy J. Nathanson

Patent number: 7959591Abstract: An elongate flexible strap is adapted to be wrapped about a wearer's leg and pelvic region. The strap applies a torque to the leg, rotating the leg into a desired degree of external rotation. In a leg having an improperly aligned patella, it is believed that the external rotation improves lower extremity mechanics by aligning the patella within the trochlear groove.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2006Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: DJO, LLCInventors: Christopher M.
