Publication number: 20210232031Abstract: A novel light source for a 3D display system includes a plurality of left eye light emitters and a plurality of right eye light emitters. The left eye emitters include a broad spectral distribution emitter and an overlapping narrow spectral distribution emitter in each of the blue, green, and red color bands. Similarly, the right eye emitters include a broad spectral distribution emitter and an overlapping narrow spectral distribution emitter in each of the blue, green, and red color bands. The combined spectral distributions of each of the broad and narrow emitters provide a primary light for each color and for each eye that has a desirable spectral shape, including wide bandwidth and short tail(s). The invention thus minimizes cross-talk and speckling in left- and right-eye images of 3D display systems.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2021Publication date: July 29, 2021Applicant: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Barret LIPPEY, Martin J. Patent number: 11074875Abstract: Techniques for driving a dual modulation display include generating backlight drive signals to drive individually-controllable illumination sources. The illumination sources emit first light onto a light conversion layer. The light conversion layer converts the first light into second light. The light conversion layer can include quantum dots or phosphor materials. Modulation drive signals are generated to determine transmission of the second light through individual subpixels of the display. These modulation drive signals can be adjusted based on one or more light field simulations. The light field simulations can include: (i) a color shift for a pixel based on a point spread function of the illumination sources; (ii) binning difference of individual illumination sources; (iii) temperature dependence of display components on performance; or (iv) combinations thereof.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2020Date of Patent: July 27, 2021Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Ajit Ninan, Chun Chi Wan

Patent number: 11070774Abstract: A dual-modulation projection system (100) includes a light source (102), a phase modulator (104), an amplitude modulator (106), and a controller (110) having temporal lightfield simulation capabilities (114). The phase modulator (104) spatially modulates a lightfield from the light source (102) to generate an intermediate image on the amplitude modulator (106). The amplitude modulator (106) spatially modulates the intermediate image to form a final image. The controller (110) models the phase state of the phase modulator (104) during transitions between phase modulator frames and generates lightfield simulations of the intermediate image during the transition. The controller (110) utilizes the lightfield simulations to generate and provide sets of amplitude drive values to the amplitude modulator (106) at a faster rate than that at which the phase modulator (104) is capable of switching.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2018Date of Patent: July 20, 2021Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Trevor Davies, Martin J. Publication number: 20210218938Abstract: A novel projection system includes first and second light sources (e.g., sets of lasers), a spatial light modulator (SLM) that receives light from the first light source, and a beam steering device that receives light from the second light source and steers the light to highlight regions of the SLM. The SLM then modulates the light from both light sources to generate a highlighted imaging beam which can then be projected on a viewing surface. The highlighted imaging beam can represent a highlighted 2D image or a highlighted left- or right-eye view of a 3D image. The projection system thus improves peak brightness in the displayed highlighted images without incorporating a separate highlight projector or other expensive equipment. Methods for highlighting projected images are also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2021Publication date: July 15, 2021Applicant: DOLBY LABORATORIES LICENSING CORPORATIONInventors: Martin J. Publication number: 20210219091Abstract: Embodiments are described for an adaptive audio system that processes audio data comprising a number of independent monophonic audio streams. One or more of the streams has associated with it metadata that specifies whether the stream is a channel-based or object-based stream. Channel-based streams have rendering information encoded by means of channel name; and the object-based streams have location information encoded through location expressions encoded in the associated metadata. A codec packages the independent audio streams into a single serial bitstream that contains all of the audio data. This configuration allows for the sound to be rendered according to an allocentric frame of reference, in which the rendering location of a sound is based on the characteristics of the playback environment (e.g., room size, shape, etc.) to correspond to the mixer's intent.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 22, 2021Publication date: July 15, 2021Applicant: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Charles Q. Publication number: 20210217435Abstract: A method, an apparatus, and logic to post-process raw gains determined by input processing to generate post-processed gains, comprising using one or both of delta gain smoothing and decision-directed gain smoothing. The delta gain smoothing comprises applying a smoothing filter to the raw gain with a smoothing factor that depends on the gain delta: the absolute value of the difference between the raw gain for the current frame and the post-processed gain for a previous frame. The decision-directed gain smoothing comprises converting the raw gain to a signal-to-noise ratio, applying a smoothing filter with a smoothing factor to the signal-to-noise ratio to calculate a smoothed signal-to-noise ratio, and converting the smoothed signal-to-noise ratio to determine the second smoothed gain, with smoothing factor possibly dependent on the gain delta.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 22, 2021Publication date: July 15, 2021Applicant: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Xuejing SUN, Glenn N. Publication number: 20210219052Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems which convert a multi-microphone input signal to a multichannel output signal making use of a time- and frequency-varying matrix. For each time and frequency tile, the matrix is derived as a function of a dominant direction of arrival and a steering strength parameter. Likewise, the dominant direction and steering strength parameter are derived from characteristics of the multi-microphone signals, where those characteristics include values representative of the inter-channel amplitude and group-delay differences.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 16, 2017Publication date: July 15, 2021Applicant: DOLBY LABORATORIES LICENSING CORPORATIONInventor: David S. Publication number: 20210219083Abstract: An audio object including audio content and object metadata is received. The object metadata indicates an object spatial position of the audio object to be rendered by audio speakers in a playback environment. Based on the object spatial position and source spatial positions of the audio speakers, initial gain values for the audio speakers are determined. The initial gain values can be used to select a set of audio speakers from among the audio speakers. Based on the object spatial position and a set of source spatial positions at which the set of audio speakers are respectively located in the playback environment, a set of non-negative optimized gain values for the set of audio speakers is determined. The audio object at the object spatial position is rendered with the set of optimized gain values for the set of audio speakers.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 14, 2021Publication date: July 15, 2021Applicants: DOLBY LABORATORIES LICENSING CORPORATION, Dolby International ABInventors: Jun Wang, Giulio Cengarle, Juan Felix Torres, Daniel Arteaga
