  • Patent number: 6805243
Abstract: In a flotation machine rotor, a body portion defines an interior area that is adapted to communicate with a gas source. At least one rotor blade projects radially outwardly from the body portion with at least one aperture being defined thereby and in gaseous communication with the interior area. The aperture is positioned adjacent the rotor blade and is defined in part by a lower peripheral edge. At least one lip projects radially outwardly from the lower peripheral edge so that during operation of the rotor, solids traveling along the body portion are projected radially away from the rotor by the lip and become approximately aligned with the aperture so that gas flowing from the aperture creates bubbles in the slurry that entrain at least a portion of the solid particles. The bubbles and solid particles form a froth on the surface of the slurry which can then be removed from the flotation machine.

  • Patent number: 6480009
Abstract: In a solids profile measurement system for determining the quality of a solids bed formed from a liquid-solid slurry in a vessel, a sensor adapted to generate signals indicative of a profile as measured by progressively immersing the sensor deeper into the slurry is provided. An extension mechanism, at least a portion of which is coupled at one end to the sensor and at an opposite end to a piece of processing equipment, is provided to affect retrograde movement in a first direction to immerse the sensor in a slurry, and in a second direction opposite the first direction. A controller in communication with the extension mechanism is also provided and issues commands thereto and receives signals generated by the sensor.

  • Patent number: 6327916
Abstract: In an apparatus for measuring the flow characteristics of a slurry discharged from a flotation cell, a metering flange includes a central axis and interior area defined by at least one flange wall. The metering flange is coupled to the flotation cell and includes an inlet coaxial with the axis and in fluid communication with the slurry discharge from the cell. An outlet is also coaxial with the inlet section for allowing the slurry to flow through the interior area. An impingement plate is positioned in the interior area such that an impingement surface defined by the plate is acted upon by slurry flowing through the metering flange. A load cell measures force exerted on the impingement plate by the slurry flowing through the interior area via a transfer mechanism coupled to the impingement plate and in communication with the load cell.

  • Patent number: 5876679
Abstract: A fluid bed reactor is provided having a grid baffle structure to provide increased theoretical stages within the reactor to enable the reactor to be used for time/temperature dependent reactions requiring a number of mixing stages and/or an increased particle residence time. The preferred baffle structure comprises a plurality of staggered first and second vertical members extending partly across the reactor from opposed sides of the reactor which form a path for the feed to travel therethrough from the inlet to the outlet of the reactor with the vertical members having vertical cross-members, preferably shorter than the vertical members, extending completely between adjacent vertical members and/or partly in the space between the members to form reaction stage sections whereby feed entering the reactor moves in a serpentine path and/or a sequential underflow and/or overflow path through the reaction stage sections of the baffle from the inlet of the reactor to the reactor outlet.

  • Patent number: 4689134
Abstract: A system and apparatus for dewatering a suspension of solids in a carrier liquid by means of an electrically augmented vacuum filter having an anodic electrode structure comprising an anode and a liquid impervious wall, wherein the wall is a non ion selective membrane which is permeable to both cations and anions. The non ion selective membrane being impervious to the suspension solids, carrier liquid, electrolyte and gaseous electrode reaction products. This non ion selective membrane comprises a substrate and a solid polymeric film, wherein the substrate is a cloth support and the solid polymeric film comprises a cation exchange resin, an anion exchange resin and a binder. The charge transfer numbers of the non ion selective membrane t.sup.+ is in the range of 0.20 to 0.80 and t.sup.- in the range of 0.80 to 0.20, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4681685
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling biomass growth in a fluidized bed reactor during anaerobic or aerobic treating of a waste feed. In particular, means is provided for concentrating a portion of bioparticles, the bioparticles being media with biomass adhered thereto and the concentrating means being integral to the fluid bed reactor, so that bioparticles delivered to a separator means for separating the biomass from the media are of high concentration requiring little downstream processing of the biomass separated thereby.
