  • Patent number: 4885181
Abstract: A process for decaffeinating green coffee by extraction of the coffee with water and treatment of the aqueous extract with activated carbon whereby the caffeine is largely absorbed by the activated carbon. The resulting caffeine-loaded activated carbon is then treated with a selected acid whereby the caffeine is largely removed from the activated carbon. The carbon is then washed with water until it has pH in the range of 3 to 6, determined by the standard test method for pH of activated carbon (ASTM D 3838-80). The activated carbon is then ready to be reused more than ten times in the process without further treatment.

  • Patent number: 4708263
Abstract: Method and apparatus for dispensing beverage concentrates and preventing concentrate from drying-up. In a beverage dispensing machine, an outlet nipple is provided having a first diameter bore portion and a second bore portion conically flared outward extending away from the first bore portion. The shape of the second bore retains a quantity of concentrate therein after dispensing which prevents ambient air from contacting concentrate in the smaller first bore portion and prevents the concentrate therein from drying-up.

  • Patent number: 4653252
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a combination of a case accommodating a flexible ynthetic plastics container or bag having a pouring opening and filled at least partly with liquid. The starting point for forming the case is a blank having such folding lines and cuts that when the blank is folded about the synthetic plastics bag, the latter is automatically fixed in the case being formed. The blank has two rectangular portions, one so-called base portion and a top face portion, which portions are interconnected by a second end face panel. The two edges of the base portion opposite the second end face panel and the top face portion connect with a first end face panel and a third end face panel, respectively. The opposed free edges of the base portion and the top face portion connect with side panels, and at least a part of the end face panels is provided with flaps. The various portions are interconnected by means of folding lines.

  • Patent number: 4508553
Abstract: This invention concerns an improved process for separating one crystallize component from a liquid containing a plurality of components, which comprises passing a stream of said liquid successively through at least part of a series of zones of successively lower temperatures including the zone of lowest temperature, so as to induce the formation of crystals of said one component in each of said zones, passing the crystals formed in each of said zones in a direction countercurrent to the direction of the stream of liquid through at least part of said zones, including the zone of highest temperature, separating the crystals present in the zone of highest temperature from their mother liquor and recovering at least part of these crystals, separating the crystals in the zone of lowest temperature from their mother liquor and recovering that mother liquor, and recirculating part of said crystals present in one zone, from that zone to a zone of lower temperature.

  • Patent number: 4495211
Abstract: A process for the decaffeination of green coffee beans by the extraction, process stage (a), of soaked green coffee beans with an equilibrium extract of coffee beans, from which extract caffeine has been removed, resulting in caffeine-deficient beans, which are recovered, and an equilibrium extract of the beans, which in a series of successive process stages (b), (c), (d) and (e), is contacted with an adsorbent circulating counter-currently through the same process steps, said adsorbent having a preferential adsorption capacity for caffeine. The equilibrium extract from stage (a) together with solution from stage (e) are contacted in stage (b) with adsorbent from stage (c) with adsorption of caffeine from the solution. The resulting solution is partly returned to stage (a), and partly, in stage (e), contacted with "clean" adsorbent from stage (d). The resulting "clean" solution is contacted, in stage (d) with adsorbent from stage (e) with desorption of caffeine from said adsorbent.

  • Patent number: 4481169
Abstract: A washing column for the continuous separation between a solid chemical fed in a liquid multi-component system, on the one hand, and the mother liquor in which the solid chemical is suspended, on the other. In a cylindrical working space a stationary, straight, plane washing front is maintained in a packed bed of the solid chemical substance between the mother liquor, on the one hand, and a melt of the solid chemical, on the other. According to the invention, the washing column is double-walled to form an enveloping space, which contains a heat insulating medium and can be pressurized to conform to the pressure within the column. This construction permits the use of a relatively thin, glass inner wall of uniform wall thickness and inner surface. This renders the column resistant to corrosive chemicals, reduces the effect of heat exchange with the surroundings, and prevents instabilities in the washing front.

  • Patent number: 4401239
Abstract: Container for transporting and likewise dispensing liquids, provided with a eceptacle having the shape of a flexible plastics bag with a discharge spout, provided in a more rigid, supporting and enveloping box, a so-called bag-in-box package. It can be brought from a transport position, in which the flexible liquid bag with attached discharge spout is enclosed protectively in the enveloping box, in an operating position wherein, with avoidance of spilling of liquid through pressure on bag and spout, the liquid bag is likewise enclosed in the box, however the discharge spout extends in the container in such a way that it can be operatively combined with an operating mechanism disposed in a beverage vending machine, in order to dispensingly pump liquid from the bag.
