  • Publication number: 20160001533
Abstract: The present invention relates to film structure suitable for use in stand up pouches comprising all polyethylene material. The film structure can be a monolayer film or a multilayer film structure having specific requirements for each layer. The combination results in a film structure having adequate stiffness to function as a stand-up pouch while also providing acceptable water vapor transmission rates and good tear resistance. Such films have improved sustainability characteristics as they should permit down-gauging of the films and, can more easily be recycled, at least for the preferred embodiment comprising only polyethylene resins.

The outer layer comprises a polyolefinic material having a Vicat softening temperature of 85° C. or greater, and a total crystallinity in the range of 25 to 45%. The core comprises a linear low density polyethylene having a density of 0.925 g/cm3 or less, and a melt index of 4.0 g/10 min or less. The inner layer comprises linear low density polyethylene having a density of from 0.865 to 0.926 g/cm3 and a melt index of less than 4.0 g/10 minutes. The films of the present invention have less than 25% of polyethylenes having a density of 0.930 g/cm3 or greater. Further, the films of the present invention can be characterized by the substantial absence of polyamide, polyester, ethylene vinyl acetate, ionomers, polyvinyl chloride, and/or cyclic olefin polymers.

  • Patent number: 8664337
Abstract: The present invention is a film having a thickness greater than 100 microns comprising from 10 to 100 percent by weight of a polyethylene polymer made by the process of a) selecting a target polyethylene resin having a density, as determined according to ASTM D792, in the range of from 0.90 g/cm3 to 0.955 g/cm3, and a melt index, as determined according to ASTM D1238(2.16 kg, 190 C), in the range of from 0.01 g/10 min to 10 g/10 min; b) reacting said target polyethylene with an alkoxy amine derivative in an amount less than 900 parts derivative per million parts by weight of total polyethylene resin under conditions sufficient to increase the melt strength of the target polyethylene resin; and c) forming a thick film from the modified target resin. The present films include those which can achieve similar processability as those containing unmodified linear polyethylene despite having at least 10% less LDPE resins in the formulation.

  • Publication number: 20130273356
Abstract: This invention relates to the modification of polyolefin structures, parts or components, used in assemblies to enhance the bonding of polar adhesives to surface of the polyolefin structures. Disclosed herein are novel articles comprising polyolefin structures having one or more surfaces modified according to the invention. The polyolefin structures have one or more surfaces with an epoxy resin layer disposed directly on the surface and then disposed on the epoxy resin layer is a layer of one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having reactive isocyanate groups. The invention is also a method for modifying one or more surfaces of a polyolefin structure by successively depositing on the surfaces an epoxy resin layer disposed and a layer of one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having reactive isocyanate groups. Also disclosed are kits of the modified polyolefin structures and one or more of adhesives or coatings having polar reactive groups.

  • Publication number: 20130035438
Abstract: The present invention is an ethylene-based polymer comprising reacting a polyethylene resin with an alkoxy amine derivative corresponding to the formula: (R1)(R2)N—O—R3 where R1 and R2 are each independently of one another, hydrogen, C4-C42 alkyl or C4-C42 aryl or substituted hydrocarbon groups comprising O and/or N, and where R1 and R2 may form a ring structure together; and where R3 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon or a substituted hydrocarbon group comprising O and/or N. Preferred groups for R3 include —C1-C19alkyl; —C6-C10aryl; —C2-C19akenyl; —O—C1-C19alkyl; —O—C6-C10aryl; —NH—C1-C19alkyl; —NH—C6-C10aryl; —N—(C1-C19alkyl)2. R3 most preferably contains an acyl group. The resulting resin has increased melt strength with higher ratio of elongational viscosities at 0.1 to 100 rad/s when compared to substantially similar polyethylene resins which have not been reacted with an alkoxy amine derivative.

  • Publication number: 20130005887
Abstract: A process for preparing a one-pack additive package for use in PVC compounding includes the steps of absorbing liquid additives, if any, into a nucleus; blending the nucleus with solid lubricant(s); then blending optional solid additives and optional drying agents therewith to obtain a free-flowing, dry blend, particulate one-pack. The resulting layered dry blend composition may then be pelletized, if desired. Because liquids are absorbed into the nucleus and then the temperature is maintained, during and after the lubricant blending step, at least 5° C. below the melt temperature of the lowest melting lubricant wax, no free liquids are present and potential interactions between additives are avoided.
