    Abstract: Oil in water emulsion compositions, and methods for preparing such emulsions, where the oil phase component of the emulsion contains at least 50 weight percent of a low molecular weight siloxane are disclosed. The oil in water emulsions are stabilized by a combination of a silicone polyether and anionic surfactant. The oil in water emulsions, and subsequently diluted emulsions therefrom, are stable with time and are useful in a variety of personal, medical, and household care formulations.

Preferred emulsions comprise a copolymer comprising polydiorganosiloxane blocks and organic blocks, having a viscosity in the range 10 to 1000000 Pa.s and a mean particle size of 0.3 to 1000 micrometers.

The mixture is mechanically agitated until a microemulsion is obtained containing polysiloxane particles having an average diameter of less than 50 nanometer (0.05 micron/500 angstrom Å). These microemulsions are useful in paper coating, textile coating, and home care applications. They can also be used to deliver silicone polymers of tailored rheological properties to the human body.

However, the polymerization is interrupted by the emulsification of this copolymer, and a carboxylic anhydride is added prior to the emulsification. The resulting emulsions are particularly useful in most personal care applications, and they also have value in textile fiber treatment, leather lubrication, fabric softening, as release agents, in water based coatings, for oil drag reduction, lubrication, and for the facilitation of cutting of cellulose materials.

    Abstract: An emulsion containing particles of an organopolysiloxane is prepared by (i) combining a silanol endblocked siloxane, an alkyltrialkoxysilane, water, and a nonionic surfactant or an anionic surfactant; (ii) emulsifying these ingredients by agitating these ingredients or by using a high shear device; (iii) adding a condensation specific acid catalyst to the emulsion; (iv) polymerizing the catalyzed emulsion to form an organopolysiloxane polymer; and (v) continuing polymerizing step (iv) until the resulting organosiloxane polymer has the desired viscosity. Organosiloxane polymers exhibiting improved release properties can be obtained by using alkyltrialkoxysilanes R′Si(OR″)3 where R′ and R″ each represent alkyl groups, and R′ contains at least eight, preferably at least twelve, and most preferably at least sixteen or more carbon atoms.
