Patent number: 5655493Abstract: A low-friction, extended-life exhaust valve has a coating on the valve stem that is protected from hot exhaust gases. The valve stem slides axially in a valve guide pressed into the cylinder head, and the coating on the valve stem is receded away from the end of the valve guide exposed to the hot exhaust gases passing through the exhaust port. Protecting the coating from the hot exhaust gases allows the use of coatings that cannot normally withstand the harsh environment to which the exhaust valve is exposed. The preferred coating is a molybdenum oxide coating, which not only retains lubricating oil because of its porous nature, but also has solid lubricity which is useful in case of hydrostatic breakdown of the lubricant between engine cycles.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1996Date of Patent: August 12, 1997Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventors: Bernard F. Enright, David D. Lange

Patent number: 5614658Abstract: A diffusion path is provided from the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine, and a restriction is provided in the diffusion path which permits diffusion of gaseous exhaust therethrough, and which reduces diffusion of particulate exhaust therethrough, reducing contamination and/or poisoning of a downstream sensor. In a lean-burn industrial engine, the exhaust temperature is lower than the operating temperature of a lean-burn oxygen sensor, and the restricted diffusion path concurrently minimizes cooling of the sensor by gaseous exhaust flow thereagainst. The sensor element is in an antechamber in a housing external of the exhaust pipe, and auxiliary heaters in the housing relieve overdriving of the internal heater of the lean-burn oxygen sensor, extending life to meet long interval industrial requirements.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1994Date of Patent: March 25, 1997Assignee: Dresser IndustriesInventor: Dennis W. Patent number: 5611844Abstract: A method for sampling and analyzing landfill gas, in which the landfill gas, which consists primarily of methane and contains volatile organic components, is passed through a quantity of liquid tetraglyme to cause the volatile organic components to be absorbed in the tetraglyme. The tetraglyme containing the absorbed volatile organic components, is then disposed in a sealed container with zero headspace and transported to a laboratory testing facility. At the testing facility, at least a portion of the tetraglyme is withdrawn from the container, dispersed in water, and subjected to a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedure to analyze the volatile organic components.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1995Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventors: John Troost, George Prokuda, James A.
