Abstract: A blend of powders to be used in gelled anodes of electrochemical cells contains oil binders comprised of liquid petrolatum or halocarbon, particularly fluorocarbon, oils. Such binders maintain homogeneity of the powdered anode blends even under adverse storage and transporting conditions.
Abstract: A terminal conductor such as a nail for an electrochemical cell having a top made of a resilient material such as plastic with the conductor having integral anchoring means such as a rounded barb functioning as a buttress to substantially prevent extraction or expulsion of the conductor from the top.

Abstract: Corrosion is reduced in aqueous electrochemical cells having zinc anodes by utilizing mercury amalgamated discrete single crystal zinc particles to which small amounts of one or more of indium, thallium, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, tin and lead have been added or prealloyed with the zinc, prior to formation of the single crystal particles. A synergistically lowered rate of corrosion and cell gassing is obtained even with reduction of mercury content.

Abstract: A cathode for an air depolarized cell in which the hydrophobic catalytic cathode contains or is integrally coated with, on the surface adjacent the cell separator, an absorbent material such as the gelling material used in the anode. The absorbent material, integrated with the cathode surface, adheres the separator to the cathode thereby preventing delamination and provides an electrolyte reservoir for the hydrophobic cathode.
Abstract: A packaging method and a package for bulk containment of lop-sided articles such as blister carded or similarly packaged items in a space saving nested arrangement are described. A tray, such as a display tray, containing the blister carded items, has retaining means such as a tray wrapper to prevent unintended spillage of the blister carded items but which permits nesting of the blister cards contained within two closely juxtaposed trays whereby efficient nesting of the packed items is obtained in a readily handled package having structurally retentive properties.
Abstract: A method for making single crystals of metal or other crystallizing materials whereby powders of irregular shaped single crystal particles (as small as 325 mesh or about 50 microns) may be readily and economically made. Said method comprises the steps of: (a) forming thin individual coatings on each of said particles such as oxides of metals on metal particles; (b) melting the particle material within said coatings which function as individual particle crucibles; (c) cooling the melted particles within the coatings to form individual single crystals each within its own coating; and (d) removing the coating such as by solvation with a solvent or by chemical reaction. The single crystal particles conform to the original shape of the particles which may be irregular. Such irregular shaped single crystals, such as of zinc, when used in electrochemical cell anodes enables the utilization of reduced amounts of mercury for amalgamation thereof without significant increase in cell gassing.
Abstract: An electrochemical cell particularly of small dimensions having a vent which comprises a hot melt adhesive or other extrudible leak resistant material sealed to and substantially surrounding that portion of a metal electrode conductor extending through an aperture in a cell sealing element.
Abstract: A lithium-containing electrochemical cell with a glass-metal seal and cell terminal structure thereon with said glass comprising a glass loaded with alumina or other stable metal oxide or an aluminosilicate glass with or without such alumina or stable metal oxide loading.

Abstract: The present invention provides a novel process for forming a cell can or container, for a cylindrical battery having longitudinally extending internally projecting ribs which are formed along the internal surface of the battery cell. These ribs provide increased physical and electrical contact between the cell and the electrode material disposed therein. Also disclosed herein is the product formed by this process.
Abstract: A sealed, rechargeable nickel-zinc cell includes a zinc electrode active mass essentially free of zinc metal when at full discharge, a carboxylated styrene-butadiene binder retaining the zinc electrode mixture in a coherent structure, a predetermined amount of cadmium being included in the zinc electrode mixture, a separator preferably comprising at least two layers of material free of any adhesive binding the layers together and a wicking layer positioned between the nickel positive electrode and the separator.

Abstract: The disclosure describes a battery assembly which comprises several gas depolarizable electrochemical cells, e.g., metal/air cells, stacked electrically in series along a first dimension. Each cell has first and second electrodes of opposite polarities. The battery assembly also comprises a housing for containing the stack of cells. The housing includes a structure for ventilating the interior of the housing and further includes first and second opposite end walls which lie perpendicular to the first dimension. The stack of cells is arranged within the housing with the first electrode of the initial cell of the stack facing the first wall and the second electrode of the final cell of the stack facing the second wall. The battery assembly further includes first and second electrically conductive connectors disposed within the housing. The first connector has a first end electrically coupled to the first electrode of the initial cell and a second end disposed adjacent the first wall.
Abstract: In a sealed cell having an anode, a cathode, and a cylindrical can into which the principal components of the cell are assembled, a sealing and insulating member (seal) is provided at the open end of the can, and is held in sealing relationship with the can by a crimp formed over the top edge thereof. The seal may be formed so as to have a downwardly depending skirt in its lower portion; generally in the manner of a plurality of leg-like projections, usually three. Across the upper surface of the member, and over an upwardly directed and centrally located nail boss in the upper surface, there is placed a metal disc having a centrally located opening which is in interference fit with the outside periphery of the nail boss, and having a passage formed therein for pressure equalization of the space between the plastic body and the metal disc to the outside of the cell. There is an upwardly extending skirt formed around the outer periphery of the member.
