  • Patent number: 6761405
Abstract: A rocking chair including a body supporting portion, a chair base portion, a locking assembly arid a linkage. The linkage includes a strip of resilient material extending across the backrest of the chair, positioned to receive the back of an occupant of the chair. The strip has a resiliency such that, when an occupant leans back against the backrest of the chair, the strip is responsive to the pressure applied directly thereto to deform rearwardly from an original position and, when the pressure ceases, the strip returns to its original position. The linkage is operatively connected to the locking assembly to cause the locking assembly to prevent movement of the body supporting portion relative to the chair base portion when the strip is in the original position, and to cause the locking assembly to allow movement of the body supporting portion relative to the chair base portion when the strip is deformed rearwardly from the original position.

  • Patent number: 6722734
Abstract: The present invention relates to a locking assembly for a rocking chair. The locking assembly includes a pair of jaws mounted to the body-supporting portion of the chair and a set of pins mounted to the chair base portion of the chair. The jaws are operable to engage a selected pin to lock the body-supporting portion of the chair relative the chair base portion in a position that corresponds to the selected pin. The jaws include gripping faces that spread apart to define a recess when the locking assembly is operated. At the same time the gripping faces move toward the pin to cause the pin to enter the recess such that the pin becomes wedged in the recess.

  • Patent number: 6619742
Abstract: A pivot assembly for a swiveling chair is provided. The pivot assembly includes an elongated rod received in a tubular element, the elongated rod being capable to pivot by the intermediary of bearing assemblies such as to allow the chair to swivel. Each bearing assembly includes two segments mechanically engaged with one another. Each bearing assembly is responsive to pressure tending to urge the segments toward one another such as to close itself on the elongated rod and thus reduce or eliminate any clearance that may develop between the elongated rod and the bearing assembly. This arrangement is useful because it eliminates or at least it reduces free play that may develop in the components of the pivot assembly over time.

  • Patent number: 6213551
Abstract: A locking mechanism for chairs such as gliding and rocking chairs comprises a toothed rack for connection to the chair seat with the rack oriented generally in the direction of movement of the chair seat relative to the base and the teeth extending along the rack and facing towards a pin that is carried in the base. The rear end of the rack is pivoted to the chair seat and the front end of the rack is connected to a pivoting linkage arrangement operated by a lever at the side of the chair seat. Operation of the lever is effective to swing the toothed rack from a retracted position to a lowered position wherein the locking pin is engaged by a registering tooth in the rack. The attitude of the chair in the locked position will depend upon the position of the locking interengagement between the pin and the toothed rack.

  • Patent number: 6092870
Abstract: A rocking mechanism for mounting a piece of furniture, such as a chair, sofa or cradle, on a support arrangement, the rocking mechanism allowing the piece of furniture to rock relative to the support arrangement. The mechanism comprises a unitary front link, a unitary rear link and first and second lower links. The unitary front link has an upper end adapted to be pivotally mounted to the support and a lower end that defines an elongated bottom front bearing member. The unitary rear link has an upper end adapted to be pivotally mounted to the support arrangement and a lower end that defines an elongated bottom rear bearing member. Each of the lower links has a front end and a rear end.

  • Patent number: 5947557
Abstract: A rocking chair comprising a rocking mechanism that is concealed in the armrests of the chair. More specifically, each armrest includes an upper surface on which the user can place his arm and sidewalls depending from the upper surface. The sidewalls define between them a cavity of sufficient dimensions to receive the rocking mechanism. The armrests are connected to the back and the seat of the chair, so as to move with those components when a rocking movement is imparted to the chair.
