  • Patent number: 5330730
Abstract: Gas generator for an inflatable impact cushion for protecting an occupant of a motor-vehicle from injury, has a housing, in which is formed a storage chamber for liquified gas. The storage chamber is separated by a partition wall from a combustion chamber also formed in the housing. An ignition device is positioned in a precombustion chamber, and has an ignition charge to generate combustion gases during ignition. In the precombustion chamber there is guided, in a displaceable manner, a piston which, because of the combustion gases of the ignition charge, moves into and through the combustion chamber in a direction of the partition wall, in order to penetrate the partition wall. When the partition wall is penetrated there is a connection between the storage chamber and the combustion chamber by way of a liquified gas channel system so that liquified gas can flow into the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 5311692
Abstract: In a multiple-barrel firearm with removable lock housing, the two axially moveable strikers are arranged in superposed relationship, preferably being angular and provided with grooves or edges; this arrangement permits, even in case of only one solid sidewall, a favorable guidance of the strikers and contributes considerably toward making the lock housing very narrow. Since, in this firearm, the movement of a cocking bar just as the movement of firing pins takes place approximately in parallel to the movement of the strikers, the advantage is obtained in addition to a relatively simple structure that the energy for cocking coil springs guided by means of guide pins can be at a minimum as well. The guide pins connected with the strikers also take over safety functions.

  • Patent number: 5308370
Abstract: A filter device for filtering a gas flow, especially for filtering the gases produced by a gas generator for an impact protection cushion, comprises a filter element exhibiting several filter material plies of varying permeability lying in series in the flow direction. The filter element is fashioned as a wrapped member produced by winding up a length of filter material. The length of filter material has sectionally different filter materials, preferably wire mesh of differing mesh widths and metal fiber mats. A wrapped member is formed by winding up this filter material web, the wrapping plies of which consist of different materials with varying filter effects. This filter element wrap is inserted, for example, in the annular interspace between the two tubes of a double-tube gas generator. Owing to the rising pressure of the gas to be cleaned, the wrapped member is compacted with the consequence that its filtering function is improved.

  • Patent number: 5291014
Abstract: A passive safety device comprises a sensor unit for determining vehicle accelerations and decelerations, an evaluating unit for evaluating the output signal of the sensor unit, and a triggering unit for the activation of an occupant protection system upon the reception of a trigger signal, to protect the occupants from injuries. The individual units of the safety device are connected by way of optical lightguides, i.e. the communication among the individual units takes place through optical light signals. The sensor unit has an optical-mechanical acceleration sensor with at least one input lightguide, light being transmitted to the acceleration sensor by way of this lightguide. This light is transmitted within the acceleration sensor to at least one output lightguide. The optical system of the acceleration sensor arranged between the two lightguides is exposed to the accelerations to be detected and changes its optical properties in dependence on the magnitude of the acceleration forces.

  • Patent number: 5279201
Abstract: A cartridge is made up of a synthetic resin case member and a synthetic resin lid. The case member contains a first receiving chamber for receiving an igniter charge and a second receiving chamber for the accommodation of a propellant charge. A synthetic resin ignition pin flexibly connected to the lid extends into the first receiving chamber. Upon the exertion of pressure by a striker on the rear end of the ignition pin, the pin is advanced further into the first receiving chamber, a pointed forward percussion end of this ignition pin acting on the igniter charge to ignite the charge. The igniter charge is accommodated in funnel shape in a conical depression of the first receiving chamber. The percussion end of the ignition pin, extending into the igniter charge, upon displacement, causes friction in the igniter charge material and thus generates frictional heat therein.

  • Patent number: 5259644
Abstract: An ignition unit is provided with an internal housing defining a chamber in which an ignition charge and an ignition element igniting the charge are accommodated. The housing defining the chamber consists of a cover and a container which are connected to one another along a circumferential groove. A distributor housing is mounted on to the housing forming the chamber, in which distributor housing gas outlet openings are provided which are closed by a cap-shaped cover of the chamber. The V-shaped circumferential groove represents a predetermined breaking or separation position of the chamber, for which reason the cover is separated from the container when the ignition charge is ignited. The cover moves away from the container into a space until it strikes the upper end of the distributor housing. With its movement relative to the distributor housing, the cover releases the gas outlet openings so that the gases and flames can emerge from the ignition unit.

  • Patent number: 5253895
Abstract: The gas generator has a cylindrical housing, the front ends of which are closed by closure covers. A cylindrical outer section of the housing consists of high-grade steel; whereas the closure covers are made of aluminum, which has a thermal conductivity which is greater many times greater than that of the high-grade steel. In at least one of the closure covers, there is inserted a self-ignition device, which is provided with an ignitable material, that automatically ignites when reaching a minimum temperature. This minimum temperature clearly lies below the self-ignition temperature of the pressure gas-generating charge contained within the gas generator. The poor thermal conductivity in the cylindrical section of the housing prevents heat transport or transfer from outside via the housing to the pressure gas-generating charge; whereas the good thermal conductivity of the closure covers allows the quick heat transport to the self-ignition device.

  • Patent number: 5252287
Abstract: A method and apparatus for injection molding of thermoplastic material to form a hollow article in a closed mold in which a molten thermoplastic material is introduced from an injection nozzle into a mold cavity through an opening in the mold, and a pressurized gas is introduced together with the molten thermoplastic material through said opening so that the gas forms a hollow cavity under pressure within the thermoplastic material filling the mold. After the thermoplastic material is solidified to form a hollow article within the closed mold, the gas pressure in the hollow cavity of the article is reduced and the mold is opened. The pressurized gas is introduced into the mold from a gas source and the gas pressure is subsequently reduced by recycling at least a portion of the gas in the hollow cavity to the gas source, thereby avoiding loss of the gas to the surrounding atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5227577
Abstract: A device for firing ammunition includes a combustion chamber accommodating several propellant charge members which latter contain a propellant charge and an ignition system for igniting the propellant charge. A fixedly disposed primary coil which receives an ignition signal is provided at the combustion chamber while a secondary coil is arranged in each propellant charge member, this secondary coil being connected to a resistor initiating the ignition system. The magnetic field, changing with time, which is produced by the primary coil penetrates the combustion chamber and induces a current in the secondary coils of each propellant charge member at the same time so that the ignition systems of all propellant charge members are simultaneously activated and ignite all propellant charges at once. On account of the simultaneous ignition of the propellant charge members, rapid firing sequences can be attained.
