Patents Assigned to Dyson Limited
  • Patent number: 6519807
Abstract: The invention provides a cleaner head assembly for a vacuum cleaner comprising a cleaner head body pivotably attachable to a main body of a vacuum cleaner and a brush housing pivotably mounted on the cleaner head body, the brush housing having a suction opening and a brush bar mounted therein, wherein the brush housing comprises a sealed unit connectable to a vacuum cleaner air inlet via a conduit separate from the cleaner head body. The arrangement allows the brush housing to be doubly articulated with respect to the main body of the vacuum cleaner whilst the suction opening remains in a horizontal plane without requiring the use of seals which must be able to accommodate the articulation of the brush housing.

  • Patent number: 6519804
Abstract: The invention provides a vacuum cleaner (10) comprising dirt and dust separating apparatus (52) for separating dirt and dust from an airflow and having an inlet (59), and a cleaner head (22) having an outlet (32) communicating with the inlet (59) of the dirt and dust separating apparatus (52). The dirt and dust separating apparatus (52), or a part (58) thereof incorporating the inlet (59), is movable into an alternative position in which the outlet (32) of the cleaner head (22) is not in communication with the inlet (59) of the dirt and dust separating apparatus (52) and in which an alternative dirty air inlet (100) may be connected to the inlet (59) of the dirt and dust separating apparatus (52) characterized in that the inlet (59) of the dirt and dust separating apparatus (52) is adapted to cooperate releasably with the outlet (32) of the cleaner head (22).

  • Patent number: 6497123
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus comprising a drum for containing and agitating an article, wherein the drum comprises at least two rotatable drum portions in rotatable connection with one another, a rotator member in connection with each rotatable drum portion for rotating the drum portion about an axis. The apparatus is preferably a washing machine, and the method of operating the apparatus comprises inserting at least one article, preferably a plurality of articles, into the drum; and rotating each rotatable drum portion independently of one another to agitate the article or articles.

  • Patent number: 6493612
Abstract: An autonomous vehicle, such as a robotic cleaning device, includes wheels which support the vehicle and allow the vehicle to traverse a surface. Downward looking wheel sensors sense the presence of a surface in front of the wheels. Another sensor is provided at or near a leading edge of the vehicle for sensing the presence beneath the leading edge of the vehicle. The vehicle is arranged so that movement of the vehicle is possible if the leading edge sensor senses that there is no surface beneath the leading edge of the vehicle, provided that the wheel sensors indicate that there is a surface adjacent to the wheel. When the leading edge sensor senses that there is no surface beneath the leading edge of the vehicle, the vehicle performs an edge following routine.

  • Patent number: 6482246
Abstract: The invention provides cyclonic separating apparatus comprising a tapering cyclone having a larger end a smaller end, a fluid outlet located at the larger end of the cyclone, the fluid outlet becoming located coaxially with the cyclone, and a tangential offtake conduit communicating with the fluid outlet, wherein the distance between the tangential offtake conduit and the smaller end of the cyclone increases in the downstream direction of the tangential offtake conduit. Preferably, the tengential offtake conduit follows a substantially helical path. This reduces the turbulence created in the tangential offtake conduit and allows kinetic energy of the exiting fluid to be recovered as pressure energy.

  • Patent number: 6478291
Abstract: A shock absorbing device for an electrical cable includes a resilient member attachable to two spaced-apart portions of the cable, so as to bias the spaced-apart portions toward one another and to impart an arcuate shape to the cable between the spaced apart portions. The device also includes a spacer member for location between the cable and the resilient member. The spacer member can ensure that the cable and the resilient member are maintained at a minimum distance, so that when tension is applied to the cable, the resilient member is deformed, thus producing a rising spring rate effect in the device.

  • Patent number: 6442791
Abstract: The invention provides a vacuum cleaner having a dirty air inlet, a clean air outlet and dirt and dust separating apparatus lying in an air flow path therebetween, wherein the air flow path has a substantially uniform cross-sectional area between the dirty air inlet and the separating apparatus and between the separating apparatus and the clean air outlet. The uniformity of the cross-sectional area reduces frictional losses and reduces pressure drops within the cleaner. Some portions of the air flow path are preferably removable from the cleaner to allow access for maintenance and removal of blockages.
