    Abstract: A system for the stand-off detection of trace amounts of analyte materials such as explosives, chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and the like includes an ion source that is operably connected to an ion collection means and to a sensor. The ion source employs a first gas that is passed through an electrical discharge to produce metastable gas molecules as well as charged particles of various kinds. Ions and other charged particles are removed from the first gas which is then reacted with a second gas having a lower ionization potential to obtain reactant ions of relatively uniform energy. The reactant ions are focused and accelerated into a beam that is directed upon a surface, such as luggage or clothing that is being interrogated, to produce analyte ions which are collected and passed into the sensor that is preferably a differential mobility spectrometer.

    Abstract: A system for the collection of near real time confirmation samples is provided to quickly eliminate false positive alarms by confirming the presence or absence of a chemical agent when a monitor operating in near real time to detect the presence of that chemical agent generates an alarm. The confirmation sampling system is synchronized with the near real time monitor and the confirmation sampler and monitor draw common samples of the atmosphere of concern. In the event that the monitor generates an alarm, the confirmation sampler preserves the sample taken contemporaneously with the alarm event for separate analysis, and also takes and preserves one or more follow-on samples.

    Abstract: A process for the destruction of vesicants, nerve agents, and related chemical compounds is described. Blister-type chemical agents such as lewisite and mustards, as well as G or V Class nerve agents and phosphorus-containing pesticides, are reacted with a neutralent solution of a persulfate, preferably potassium peroxymonosulfate, and a peroxide, preferably hydrogen peroxide, at temperatures ranging from ambient to boiling for a time sufficient to reduce the residual agent concentration to levels acceptable for disposal in a routine manner.

    Abstract: A gas sampling system includes a sample trapping module having a gas pump and a power supply, and a removable magazine that fits within a port of the trapping module. The magazine contains a non-volatile electronic memory, which controls operation of the trapping module, and has a rotating carousel for holding sample tubes. Individual sample tubes are sealed at each end by a cap that has a needle-pierceable septum, and contain a solid collector material to trap chemical and biological contaminants in a gas sample drawn through the sample tube. Individual sample tubes are moved into and out of a sampling location by incremental rotation of the carousel and, while at the sampling location, a pair of hollow bore needles are inserted through the sample tube end caps to allow the drawing of a gas sample through the tube.
