Abstract: An aqueous wash solution is buffered to a pH of from about 5 to about 9 and contains at least about 0.01 weight percent of a compound comprising a dodecyl sulfate anion and an alkali metal or ammonium cation, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate. This wash solution is particularly useful in a method for the determination of an immunological ligand. Particularly, it is useful for washing the immunological complex formed between the ligand and a receptor molecule therefor. Unreacted materials can be readily separated from the complex by the washing, particularly if the separation is carried out using a filtration membrane in a test device. a test kit for ligand determination comprises the wash solution as well as one or more receptors for the ligand, at least one of which is labeled for detection. This kit is particularly useful for measuring human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as an early indicator of pregnancy.

Abstract: Disclosed are carboxyl polyesters which are useful in the formulation of powder coating compositions. The polyesters are characterized by the presence of terminal carboxycyclohexanecarboxylate groups. Also disclosed is a process for the preparation of the carboxyl polyesters from similar hydroxy polyesters.
Abstract: An electrically operated shutter for photographic apparatus, particularly cameras, wherein a movable element for blocking and unblocking the light path to the film is operated by the bending and unbending of a bimetallic element upon heating by electric current and subsequent cooling, preferably with the use of heat sink means moveable into heat transferring relation with the bimetallic element to hasten cooling.
Abstract: A holographic scanning motor is disclosed that includes a ring shaped rotor, a hologon scanning disc located within the ring shaped rotor, an air bearing assembly on which the rotor rides, and a stator assembly coupled to the air bearing assembly by a sleeve structure, wherein the sleeve structure includes at least one vent hole. The rotor is Y-shaped which permits a very compact planar motor design. Further reductions in size are accomplished by locating the permanent rotor magnets within the stem of the rotor. Additional cooling capacity is provided by mounting at least one fan blade adjacent to the hologon scanner disc on at least one side of the rotor. A mounting pad for the hologon scanning disc is also provided that has a higher thermal resistance than the rotor.
Abstract: An assembly and method for monitoring the alignment of a workpiece with respect to a reference. The assembly and method employ an element which preferably comprises a capability for optical phase conjugation. Advantage which can result from the use of the element include enhanced sensitivity to alignment variations for both large and very small angle deviations from the reference.
Abstract: The invention provides stable dispersions of couplers and methods of their formation. The stable dispersions are formed by the use of a nonionic water soluble polymer in combination with an anionic surfactant having a sulfate or sulfonate head group and a hydrophobic group of 8 to 20 carbons. The preferred nonionic water soluble polymers are polyethyleneoxide and polyvinylpyrrolidene.
Abstract: An electronic still camera employs digital processing of image signals corresponding to a still image and storage of the processed image signals in a removable static random access memory card. An image sensor is exposed to image light and the resultant analog image information is converted to digital image signals. A control processor controls the exposure section and the A/D converter, delivering digital signals to a multi-image buffer at a rate commensurate with normal operation of the camera. A digital processor operates on the stored digital signals, transforming blocks of the digital signals and encoding the signals into a compressed stream of processed image signals, which are downloaded to the memory card. The digital processor operates at a throughput rate different than the input rate for better image capture and optimum utilization of the camera.
Abstract: Multicolor electrophotographic apparatus secures the ends of a receiving sheet in a trough which runs parallel to the axis of rotation of a transfer roller. An inclined surface in the trough gradually declines the transfer sheet away from the periphery of the transfer roller to prevent a photoconductive drum from receiving a jar as it rides off the edge of the transfer sheet. Preferably, the means defining the declining ramp surface also defines vacuum holes for securing the ends of the receiving sheet.
Abstract: An apparatus for forming multicolor toner images includes an endless web having rows of perforations along each edge. In one embodiment, two or more drums have sprockets on each end. These sprockets engage the rows of perforations in the web. Toner images of different color are created in each drum by creating electrostatic images and toning those images with toners of different colors. The toner images are transferred in registration to the web. The number of perforations in the web is chosen to create a small amount of slack between the drums which permits the sprocket teeth to orient the web with respect to each drum thereby preventing misregistration due to skew, for example, because of misalignment of the axes of the drums. According to a second embodiment a similar registration scheme is used with images that are formed by exposing and toning the same portion of a photoconductive web with toners of different color.
Abstract: A dressing device and method are described, for use with a needle that is injected into the skin. The dressing device comprises a cover sheet and a gel medium attached to the cover sheet, the gel medium being transparent and effective to reseal after being punctured by the needle. Most importantly, the gel medium includes a sterilizing agent.Injection of the needle into the skin occurs only after the needle penetrates the gel medium, so that the needle is disinfected or sterilized.
Abstract: A photographic element is disclosed comprised of a support and, coated on the support, at least one radiation-sensitive silver halide emulsion comprised of tabular silver halide grains and a dispersing medium. The emulsion includes as a vehicle methacrylate polymer latex capable of reducing pressure sensitivity having a glass transition temperature of less than 50.degree. C.
Abstract: An improvement in apparatus for producing a multi-color electrophotographic image wherein an electrophotographic medium is mounted on a carrier therefor and is translated over a predetermined path so that the medium is first charged, then exposed to a first light-borne image. The image bearing region of the medium is then toned, preferably by a liquid toner, to produce a first color visible image. The carrier is then returned to the first position to repeat the foregoing steps to charge the medium and to expose it to a second light-borne image and to tone the second image with a second toning element to produce a second color visible image on the same sheet of medium. The improvement comprises means for buffing the surface of the first toned image with a relatively coarse, stiff, and rough fibrous brush member after the first toning step and prior to the second charging step to smooth the previously toned image to prevent color contamination by subsequent imaging cycles.
Abstract: An optical recording element comprising a thin film optical recording layer of an alloy is disclosed. The alloy is represented by the formula Sb.sub.x Te.sub.1-x, wherein x is between about 0.58 and 0.75. The alloys have short erasure times (amorphous to crystalline transition) and excellent environmental stability.
Abstract: The invention is generally accomplished by providing an apparatus for filtering that comprises a liquid container and a filtering container designed to be placed within the liquid container. The filtering container is provided with filtering areas on the bottom and/or sides that allow liquid to pass through the sides of the filtering container and be filtered. The liquid then may be withdrawn by pumping from the filtering container. In a preferred form of the invention the containers are closely contoured such that the filtering container fits within the liquid container so that there is very little waste when filtered liquid is withdrawn from the filtering container.
Abstract: A magnetic head is mounted on a camera film platen which is supported for constrained movement relative to the camera body to maintain a precise relationship between an information track recorded on the film and a film edge. The magnetic head is pivotally mounted on the film platen. Means are provided to establish one angular orientation of the head to establish one angular orientation of the head with respect to the film during prewind to read information recorded by the film manufacturer and a second different angular orientation during transport of the film in the opposite direction during film exposure to record information relating to film exposure. This enables a camera to distinguish between information recorded by the manufacturer and information recorded by a camera to determine if mid-roll interrupt occurred and, if so, the location of the last frame exposed.
