Patent number: 9386358Abstract: Summaries of video programs can be automatically created by identifying and compiling repeated portions of the program content. In many programs (such as broadcasts of sporting events), the most interesting portions of the event are often repeated more than once during the course of the program. By automatically identifying the replayed portions of the video presentation, then, a highlight summary of a television broadcast can be automatically created. Repeated imagery can be automatically identified by comparing metric values representing the contents of video frames. This technique can be implemented within a set top box or other television receiver that is operated by a viewer, thereby providing a high level of flexibility and convenience.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2014Date of Patent: July 5, 2016Assignee: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventors: Robert Jackson, William Michael Beals

Publication number: 20160188286Abstract: Song shuffling system plays a series of songs selected from a shuffled plurality of predefined audio content sources. An exemplary embodiment concurrently receives, during a shuffle operation, a stream of audio content from each of the predefined audio content sources, wherein each of the streams of audio content comprises a plurality of serially received songs. Each song is stored by the media device as the song is received. A first predefined audio content source is selected from the predefined audio content sources. Then, a first song is selected having a beginning portion that is stored in the memory medium and that was provided by the selected first predefined audio content source. A second predefined audio content source is selected from the predefined audio content sources that is to provide a second song that is to be presented to the user upon conclusion of the presentation of the first song.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2014Publication date: June 30, 2016Applicant: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.Inventor: Gregory Greene

Publication number: 20160191913Abstract: Various arrangements for monitoring the signal strength of a programming stream are presented. A tuner in a receiver may be allocated to monitor disruptions and changes to the signal strength of programming streams. Based on the characteristics of the signal strength and changes to additional data such as weather information, a cause of the disruption may be determined. The cause of the disruption may be communicated to a user. Characteristics of the disruption may be unique or localized to specific geographic locations. Based at least in part on the geographic location of a receiver characteristics of disruptions may be used to identify television receivers associated with account packing.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 29, 2014Publication date: June 30, 2016Applicant: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.Inventors: Henry Gregg Martch, Edmund Petruzzelli

Publication number: 20160191147Abstract: Systems and methods for enabling computing device or system resource sharing between two or more satellite television customers are disclosed. This may be achieved by partitioning resources of a television receiver system such that a first party and at least a second party have access to the various features or functionality in a manner similar to that as if each respective party has a standalone instance of the same. A server system may facilitate the resource sharing between satellite television customers by receiving a request from a first party and identifying a second party within suitable distance from the first party. The server system may send configuration instructions to the television receiver of the hosting party that include instructions as to how the resources of the computing system are to be allocated.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2015Publication date: June 30, 2016Applicant: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: Henry Gregg Martch

Patent number: 9363464Abstract: Various embodiments facilitate history-based decision making in television receivers, such as set-top boxes. In one embodiment, a history-based decision facilitator (“HBDF”) is provided. The HBDF facilitates decision making in a television receiver based on device history data received from the television receiver. In one embodiment, the HBDF receives an indication of an operation to be performed by the television receiver, the operation including one or more parameters. In response, the HBDF determines values for the one or more parameters, based on device history data received from the television receiver. The HBDF then provides the determined parameter values to the television receiver. In one example application, the HBDF can determine a tuner of the television receiver to utilize for recording a program, based on the history of the television receiver, such as that the determined tuner is typically idle during the scheduled recording time period.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2010Date of Patent: June 7, 2016Assignee: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: Michael Alexander

Patent number: 9357260Abstract: Various embodiments of apparatus and/or methods are described for skipping, filtering and/or replacing content from an audio/video stream using text data associated with the audio/video stream. The text data is processed using location information that references a segment of the text data of the first audio/video stream to identify a location within the first audio/video stream. The location within the first audio/video stream is utilized to identify portions of the audio/video stream that are to be skipped during presentation. The portions of the audio/video stream that are to be skipped are filtered from the audio/video stream, and some of the skipped portions of the audio/video stream are replaced with substitute content. The filtered video stream, including the substitute content, is outputted for presentation to a user.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2014Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventors: Steven M. Patent number: 9357159Abstract: A provider transmits instructions to a receiver to record multiple instances of content. The instances of content are included in the same frequency band of a broadcast signal transmitted via a first communication link and encoded utilizing a common encryption. The provider determines to supplement and transmits an instruction to record a supplemental instance of content from a second content provider via a second communication link. The receiver receives the instructions and accordingly receives, decodes, and stores the multiple instances of content and the supplemental content. A recorder in communication with the receiver determines whether a content selection is a member of a content group. The group determination is based on a tag of the content selection. If the content selection is a member of the content group, the recorder presents to a display device the content selection and at least one other member of the content group.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2011Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.Inventors: Henry Gregg Martch, Max S.
