Patent number: 8511540Abstract: A content receiver receives an update to a memory unit contained therein utilizing data stored in a data card inserted or incorporated into the content receiver. The content receiver dynamically generates a matrix code based on the updates received in the memory and on information uniquely identifying the content receiver. The matrix code is transmitted to a content display device for display, and a matrix code reader detects the displayed matrix code and transmits information contained within the matrix code to a content provider for updating a user's account associated with the updated content receiver. The content provider may transmit a message to the content receiver for display on the content display device indicating the update to the user's account. The content provider may transit a similar message to the matrix code reader.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2011Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: Echostar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: Jason Anguiano

Patent number: 8472783Abstract: In various embodiments, a recording and playback manager of a digital video recorder (DVR), set top box, receiver or other device stores and accesses statistics in a statistics file related to average distances between reference frames (e.g., intra frames or I-frames) within blocks of the video data of the recording. Accessing these statistics during playback enables the system to more accurately locate reference frames to display while executing the playback in a trick mode such as fast forward, rewind or skip. The average distance between reference frames for a particular block of video data may be used to jump from one reference frame to the next reference frame in that block during playback in trick mode.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2010Date of Patent: June 25, 2013Assignee: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: Michael Alexander

Publication number: 20130160066Abstract: A method of communication involving a media content receiver is presented. In the method, the media content receiver receives a message including an address. The receiver processes the address to determine whether the address is associated with the media content receiver. Additionally, if a removable circuit device is installed in the receiver, the receiver processes the address to determine whether the address is associated with the installed removable circuit device. If the address is associated with the media content receiver, the receiver processes the message. If the address is associated with the removable circuit device, the receiver transfers the message to the removable circuit device, which then processes the message.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 15, 2013Publication date: June 20, 2013Applicant: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.Inventor: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.

Publication number: 20130156400Abstract: Presented herein is a method of extending a recording in a media content receiver of a media event that is delayed. In the method, a recording of media content is begun at an expected start time for the media event based on a recording timer, wherein the recording timer indicates the expected start time and an expected end time for the media event. After beginning the recording, the media content being recorded is analyzed to determine an actual start time for the media event. The actual start time is then compared with the expected start time. If the difference between the actual start time and the expected start time exceeds some predetermined value, the expected end time is adjusted to extend the recording. The recording is then ended at the adjusted end time.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 8, 2013Publication date: June 20, 2013Applicant: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.
