Publication number: 20120307076Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for assessing the video image decoding quality of a set top box (STB), television receiver or other video device. Moving video testing of video delivery hardware in a manufacturing environment uses a video sequence that has reference characteristics embedded in the visible portion of the video signal from frame to frame. Each frame of the video is analyzed for distortions of the embedded reference objects, and the reference objects are allowed to move from frame to frame. The reference objects are located through the use of a background that is easily discriminated from the objects and by the use of frame templates that locate the reference information in the frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 1, 2012Publication date: December 6, 2012Applicant: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.Inventors: Wally E. Patent number: 8326127Abstract: The various embodiments described herein generally provide for the identification of locations in a presentation stream based on metadata associated with the presentation stream. Locations within an audio/video stream are identified by processing associated text data using autonomous location information referencing the text data. The identified locations within a presentation stream may be utilized to identify boundaries of segments within the presentation stream, such as segments of a show and interstitials of the show. Processing is then performed to determine whether the identified boundaries possess specific characteristics. If the identified boundaries do not possess the identified characteristics, then additional processing is performed to identify other locations, temporally near the identified boundaries, which correspond with boundaries of the portion of the audio/video stream identified by the autonomous location information.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2009Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Assignee: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: Steven M. Publication number: 20120293416Abstract: A control device controls the functionality of two or more sets of control elements. A processing unit of the control device determines that it is oriented in a first zone or in a second zone based on input received from a magnetometer. The first and second zones are defined with respect to a magnetic reference point and are oriented relative to a controlled device or an electronic device. If the processing unit determines that the control device is oriented in the first zone, the processing unit configures a first functionality for the first set of control elements. If the control device's orientation changes from being oriented in the first zone to being oriented in the second zone, the processing unit configures the first set of control elements with a second functionality.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2011Publication date: November 22, 2012Applicant: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: William R. Publication number: 20120293637Abstract: A system, method and computer program product provide 3D on screen display content derived from 2D image content utilizing the on screen display image buffer, as opposed to an on screen display 3D buffer, of a content receiver. The on screen display image buffer separates image data for one image formatted as a 2D image into data for a first image and data for a second image. Utilizing the data for the first and second image, the on screen display image buffer formats the first and second image data for an offset display on a content display device so that a user perceives the first and the second image as a 3D image forming a portion of the on screen display. The first and second image for each of the original images may have differing offsets relative to one another thereby providing the perception of differing levels of depth for each of the 3D images.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2011Publication date: November 22, 2012Applicant: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: William J. Ivanich

Publication number: 20120290953Abstract: Techniques for facilitating social networking via a media device are described. Some embodiments provide a social networking facilitator (“SNF”) as part of a media device, such as a set-top box that is configured to receive media content events from a broadcast system, such as a satellite broadcast system. As the media device presents a media content event, a user can share, via the SNF, information about the presented media content event with members of his social network. In particular, the SNF prepares a message that includes information about or from the presented media content event, such as a title, a channel, a summary, rating, video clip, or the like. This message can then be edited by the user, such as by adding a comment or rating, before being transmitted by the SNF a social networking system, to be forwarded as a notification to members of the user's social network.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2011Publication date: November 15, 2012Applicant: ECHOSTAR TECHNOLOGIES L.L.C.Inventors: Mary J. Patent number: 8305277Abstract: A method of detecting and removing ice and/or snow on a communication antenna is presented. In the method, environmental data indicating at least one current environmental condition is received. An optical signal is transmitted from a signaling structure of the communication antenna toward a reflecting surface of the antenna. The optical signal is received at the signaling structure upon returning from the reflecting surface. The returning optical signal is then processed to determine at least one characteristic value of the returning optical signal. The reflecting surface is then heated if the environmental data indicates that ice or snow accumulation on the communication antenna is possible, and the at least one characteristic value of the returning optical signal is outside a predetermined range.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2010Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Assignee: EchoStar Technologies L.L.C.Inventor: William Reams
