Abstract: Improved checkout systems, apparatuses and methods for managing electronic coupons include a checkout kiosk, a point-of-sale system and a microprocessor with an electronic rules engine. The electronic rules engine is configured to allow application of electronic coupons to customer accounts internally to the point-of-sale system. Redemption of the electronic coupons is allowed by the consumer at the kiosk without a scan-able artifact.

Retailers may select promotion programs from a market place. Selected promotions are associated with the retailer's point-of-sale system. When an item within a promotion is detected, a promotion record may be formed. Abstract: A checkout counter includes a support surface for a standing person to place and remove items. A powered conveyor transports placed items in a direction from a first end of the conveyor toward an opposite end. The conveyor has a discharge end, and part of the support surface extends toward the opposite end beyond the conveyor. An upward-oriented bar code scanner in the support surface reads bar codes as an attendant passes them over the scanner. At least one bag mount extends laterally from the support surface and the support surface define an attendant cockpit located laterally of the checkout counter near the discharge end, allowing an attendant to stand in the cockpit facing the counter at a substantially right angle. The attendant can handle items discharged from the conveyor, pass them over the scanner, and place them in a bag without having to twist or turn his or her body.

Abstract: An improved self-checkout apparatus includes a self-checkout unit, a detection module configured to detect a product input and a fault during a transaction progression and a customer override that may be selected by a customer without attendant intervention to complete a transaction. The system includes a self-checkout housing, a means for inputting information, a means for receiving payment, a means for providing information to a customer, and a controller operatively connected to the means for inputting, means for receiving and the means for providing information to the customer. Additionally, the controller includes a reset module that responds to input inactivity prior to completion of the purchaser transaction by voiding the transaction and resetting the display to start a new transaction. The invention may also include a security verification mechanism.

Customers use the portable terminal to identify and log products that are selected as they move through a store. Item identification data is then transferred to the self-checkout station, where the customer pays for the selected products using the automated payment-accepting subsystem.

Abstract: A method and system for self-checkout of items from a retail or non-retail establishment is disclosed. The system verifies security by comparing a measured physical characteristic of an item with the stored security characteristic for that item and determining if the measured physical characteristic is within an operator-modifiable tolerance range. The operator-modifiable tolerance range is different for different of items in the store. Moreover, a stored security characteristic of an item can be updated automatically. In addition, the system includes a dynamic-weight scale that reports a measured weight before the scale settles.
